In just the past two years, the President has maneuvered Boehner and the Republicans into:

* Conceding the power to raise the debt ceiling to the President, ending the Republican Congress' ability to shut the government down in that way, or to further damage the nation's credit rating;

* Slashing half a trillion dollars from the Defense budget;

* Voting against a middle class tax cut extension in an election year.

Why would this President waste his time working with his recalcitrant foes, when he can work them over instead?
