Markets shudder after Trump warns China trade war could go beyond 2020 election

https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/03/investing/premarket-stocks-trading/index.html

London (CNN Business)Happy Tuesday. A version of this story first appeared in CNN Business' Before the Bell newsletter. Not a subscriber? You can sign up right here.

US President Donald Trump, the self-proclaimed "Tariff Man," is back in action — injecting fresh volatility into markets just as stocks had notched a string of record highs.
What's happening: Trump told reporters at a press conference in London Tuesday that the signing of a US-China trade deal is entirely at his discretion. He indicated that an agreement may not come until 2020 — or later. "I have no deadline," he said. "In some ways I think it's better to wait for after the election, if you want to know the truth."

And this is what he did on Monday:

hat follows an eventful Monday, when the United States proposed a wave of tariffs on French goods, including cheese, handbags and sparkling wine. The action, which is still subject to a public comment period, comes in response to a new French tax on digital services that affects large American tech companies including Facebook and Google.

Roughly $2.4 billion in French products could face new taxes of up to 100%, according to the office of the US Trade Representative. France's finance minister said Tuesday that the European Union "would be ready to retaliate strongly."

That's not all: Trump also made a surprise announcement that the United States will restore steel and aluminum tariffs on Brazil and Argentina, which had previously been granted exemptions.

Manipulating the markets once again, and setting us up for another financial meltdown like Bush left Obama. How can anyone in their right mind not see that this man is helping Putin, not the United Sates.

The world can then get back to some sort of normalcy and stability.

It is quite obvious to the world, except his base, that he has no idea what the hell he is doing with tariffs, or how to get out of his self made mess. He'll put it off to after the election so the next president can be blamed by him for his mess.

For him to delay the decision until after the election gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that he already feels he's toast next November.

They haven't even talked. Trump made up news of a possible deal to get negative headlines off the front page for a day or two.

China never backed him up on a deal being imminent, but the media was too lazy to check into it.

as to how much this idiot is damaging the country. I also agree he is going to leave a hell of a mess to clean up after he is gone. I think the will try and use the tariffs as a threat, he will claim he is the "only" one who can fix things even though he caused the whole mess. I

I also agree that has no clue about tariffs. He got in to a mess and we pay for it.

Seriously, last night on Bloomberg Radio the investors and economists they had on as guests were hoping the trade war would at least get to Phase I soon, that trump would lay off the December 15 tariffs, and they'd get their Santa Claus rally.
