(4,941 posts)I was struck when I visited London at all the US fast food available there.
I had flown the red-eye from Boston to Heathrow, arriving at about 6:30am. I got to my hotel around 8am and was not able to check-in so I left my luggage there and took the tube to Piccadilly Circus. I walked up the stairs to the street and directly in front of me was a Starbucks.....ugh...I traveled from San Diego to London just to be greeted by Starbucks! And just down the way, KFC on one side of the street and McDonald's on the other.

(146,331 posts)and other countries in the 1980s. I was part of the orchestra that accompanied the group. I can't tell you how many times the tour bus let people off at a MacDonald's store for lunch. WTF? I either ate from a street vendor or went into a bar or pub and had my lunch. Why on Earth would anyone travel to another country and eat at Micky Ds? Amazing.

(4,941 posts)I like to experience and sample the local cuisine when I"m traveling. I don't want to eat what I can get at home!
On another note: What do you play MineralMan?
I"m a woodwind player myself, focusing on Flute and Piccolo. I don't play double reeds and my clarinet playing leaves a whole lot to be desired but I'm pretty good on sax (have played them all at some point).
MineralMan
(146,331 posts)to play with orchestras on a pick-up basis. That Euro tour was one such instance. Now, mind you, I had to pay for the trip, about $2500 for a two-week 7-country performing tour, but it was more than worth it. The vocal group was world-class, so we had great audiences and got to play in cathedrals and large halls in major cities. In fact, taking the orchestra with them was my idea, introduced at their annual Messiah performance and rehearsals. I was always principal oboe for that orchestra for those performances.
So, it ended up being a popular idea and the other orchestra members were eager to go, so we went. Great fun, although in our 14 days, we played 13 different venues, so we spent an awful lot of time on the tour buses, traveling to the next city. Still, I got to see a lot of places I hadn't visited before, so, it was all good.
I never ate in any American fast food place, either. Why would I, with local restaurants, pubs, and cafes everywhere?

(4,941 posts)the oboe player was voted most neurotic by other members of the Orchestra....must be all that back pressure....LOL!

MineralMan
(146,331 posts)I'm far from neurotic. I took up the oboe in high school, because nobody else wanted to play the instrument. I soon discovered that playing a relatively rare instrument meant lots more opportunities to play. I laid off of it for a couple of decades, and then took it up again in my 30s. After individual practice to get myself up to a standard that would pass muster in most casual groups, I let it be known that I was available on a pick-up basis. I also played with a woodwind quintet that worked very hard to build a solid repertory and found itself playing all over the place and actually being paid to do so.
I was never a professional level player, though. I was more of an advanced amateur who could play musically and who could learn just about any music with some practice. I could hold my own, but often found myself sitting next to someone who was miles better at the oboe than I was. But, in those situations, I was filling in for a missing player and could handle the second oboe parts well enough not to be noticed as an amateur.
Fortunately, I lived in a place with lots of opportunities to play. There were many smaller orchestras and pick-up groups that assembled for some particular purpose. I also got to play in pit orchestras for musical theater groups, one of my favorite things. In those, I was the woodwind player, taking up whatever instruments that the score called for. I remember one performance where I played everything from a piccolo to a baritone saxophone. Enormous fun. As long as I had time to learn the score, I could do just fine.
I had to give up the oboe, though, when my doctor cautioned me about my high blood pressure, which was not made lower by playing that instrument. Oh, well...it was great fun while it lasted.

(16,448 posts)There are several reasons for this. I find British food, by and large, to be quite vile. Particularly pub fare and Sunday roasts. Also, when on a 2-3 week trip a little taste of home is nice. We were recently in Italy for a couple of weeks and about halfway through, when we were beginning to tire of Italian food, we stopped in for some McDonalds. It hit the spot.
So no, I wouldnt travel to Europe just to eat at McDonalds, but it can be a nice change of pace on long trips.

(146,331 posts)you can count on finding Indian restaurants and restaurants serving French cuisine. I'm also a big fan of traditional English breakfast, and actually enjoy some pub foods.

(9,897 posts)Apparently, that location is doing gangbusters business for the company...
London and Paris both have ample supplies of American junk food purveyors!
Luckily both cities are also stuffed full of far better local fare and usually in the same block or neighborhood!
Shockingly, I also found this article from 2016 about the same restaurant location:
https://slate.com/human-interest/2016/03/mcdonalds-on-paris-champs-elysees-gets-an-upscale-makeover.html
Whether the French or the annual hordes of Paris tourists are to blame, the McDonalds flagship on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées is the fast food companys most successful location in the world. It reopened in late February after a renovation that included an upscale, industrial-inspired makeover by French designer Patrick Norguet.

(10,074 posts)Laugh at his ignorance and his braying about all his nonexistent accomplishments. European leaders have essentially written off the US, and theyre forming alliances without us. The US has been a world leader my whole life. Its hard to imagine how things will change as we continue to lose our status. It isnt just Trumpits the Republican Party too as they have shown their willingness to support unlawful actions that damage other countries. World leaders can no longer trust either the president or half of Congress. And they do not trust US citizens because we are the people (not us personally) who continue to elect representatives who have shown that they care more about their own power than preserving traditional alliances and the rule of law.

(5,813 posts)perceived insult, his condition will deteriorate. He cannot tolerate any push back. His emotional development was stifled at a very young age maybe in his toddler or preschool years. So none of his behavior at this event in London should surprise anyone. Concealing his flaws in development is getting harder and harder as the impeachment process moves forward. It is appalling that the very people who could help stop this man from further damage to our nation are actively hampering their fellow congressmen from doing their duty.
I hope that soon well understand why there has been so much difficulty ridding our government of such a dangerous man. Why have so many men and women worked so diligently to disrupt the process allowed under our constitution? Let the process work. If he is innocent, let the process show that. But if he has betrayed us, let that be known and shown. The facts will come out and well know what happened and who did the crimes. But let the process go forward. We, the American people, deserve to know everything.
