At this point, it looks like the UPS driver's been hit, and may be dead.

(10,053 posts)We are all okay. Was watching news and talking to my 91 year old dad on the phone telling him to stay inside and not walk around his complex when I saw the ups truck crash through the gates of his retirement complex Century Village. When the van left and head back toward Miramar parkway I was frantically on the phone with my hubby who had just left work, to get off the road they were heading that way. When I saw the shoot out on the news, my heart just dropped as I kept looking for familiar cars praying that everyone I know is safe. I am afraid to turn on the news again. OK I just now heard from my kid who takes the bus home from work in Miami that he is almost back in broward so I can breathe again.

Glad you and yours are OK.

(10,053 posts)Another bystander that was there also perished. While I am relieved we were all okay I am just heartbroken for those who were not.

(6,247 posts)Its unfortunate that the bystanders were killed, but the bad guys put all this in motion, said Steadman Stahl, the president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two innocent bystanders
malaise
(268,976 posts)but it seems to me that something is very wrong when cops can open fire like that on busy thoroughfares.
If their aim was to rescue the UPS worker they failed big time.

(44,973 posts)Robbers likely wouldn't have let him live if they managed to escape. I believe the cops only opened fire after they were shot at by the robbers. Because it was an armed robbery with an employee being shot and then hostage taken, the protocol presumably does allow for a chase. Not sure what else police could do if robbers then open fire. Not fire back and be killed themselves?
malaise
(268,976 posts)He and the other man were murdered by cops and there is video to prove it. The situation was badly mishandled. As the UPS guy's step father asked, where was SWAT, where were the hostage experts and why did cops open fire in such a crowned and volatile situation?
To hear one of the Miami cops speak about doing this because the UPS guy was held hostage is to ignore the fact that the cops killed him in his effin' UPS uniform as he tried to escape their gun shots.
Did the robbers start this tragedy - sure but really bad police work caused two unnecessary deaths
