https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/10/politics/trump-order-judaism-nationality/index.html
Judaism has elements of a religion, a race, a nationality, an ethnic group but it isn't exclusively any of them. I can be a Jew today, a Christian tomorrow, and a Muslim the day after that. I can't be American today, Chinese tomorrow, and Cuban the day after that. To say Jews are a nationality is to "otherize" them. Do you know what other former nation considered Judaism a nationality? The Soviet Union.
Anti-semitism is a real thing, even on college campuses. There are better ways to address it than "otherizing" Jews. This is another example of Trump's childish and reductionist thinking.

One step closer to Nazism. Do you think the Kochs, Gates, Waltons and Zuckerbergs are proud of their little monster now?

(16,093 posts)It wouldn't be the first time in human history that a member of an ethnic/religious group betrayed their own, just to be on the winning side...even if it was for a short period of time!!!
Kushner hates this country, remember it was the US Government that put his father in prison...people have done more for less!!!

(18,402 posts)That scares me something awful.
As for race or ethnicity, my belief is those two are tied. My son did the 23 and me thing nine or ten years ago, when it was pretty new. His results came back 99.8% Ashkenazic Jewish. That kind of "purity" surprised me at first, but then I realized that our family history was geographically and ethnically constrained. Jews living in Eastern Europe generally were forced to live in enclaves (often ghettos) where marriage amongst other Jews would have been the norm, added to the fact that religious restrictions generally frowned on religious intermarriage. Jews from Western Europe, who had more freedom and who came to this country earlier, may have a more mixed genetic profile.
My grandparents (originally from Russia/Poland and Hungary) settled in the US and Argentina; my husband's settled in the US (from Russia via Wales) and China. Jews have been wandering (displaced) for centuries, going back to Biblical times. There is no single nationality.

(2,025 posts)The push by Dump and company is to create cover to punish the BDS movement and silence voices on campuses that are critical of Israel/support Palestine, as well as punish universities. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act allows the government to withhold funding from universities and other educational institutions that discriminate based on race, color, or national origin. The easy fix for Dump to attack campus activism is to label Judaism as a nationality, then push colleges to investigate any anti-Israeli speech as discrimination... and withhold funds if they dont crack down on this political speech.
To add to the problem, it is reminiscent of the Nuremberg laws of Nazi Germany. As in Germany, it reclassifies Jews (American-native or immigrant) into a fictional monolithic nationality. Importantly, it separates American Jews from their American nationality, and bestows on them an other(ness) nationality. This is a huge favor to the various neo-Nazi groups that like to argue that Jews arent really our American brothers and sisters.

(17,399 posts)The Simon Wiesenthal Center tweeted that it commended the order, which will have immediate impact on US campuses plagued with antisemitic and anti-Israel acts. The Executive Order sends a global message at a time of surging antisemitism on both sides of Atlantic.

I do agree that Judaism is difficult to define.
Obviously, its a religion, and anyone is free to convert and join.
We are also a people, and part of Judaism is becoming part of our people.
Ive always liked the old-fashioned tribe and embraced it because thats kind of what we are. people can come in and join, and people can leave but are still us (for a generation or two).
Not everything Trump does is stupid. Even a blind pig finds an acorn sometimes.

(33,400 posts)1. Jews are from MANY nations. They never had a nation prior to Israel. An Ethnicity? Sort of, but easier to argue than Nationality or Race.
2. Trumpists want criticism of the CURRENT Israeli Government's Palestine policy to be off-limits. MOST college-campus opposition to those policies is not Anti-Semitic (I won't say 100%). My midwestern Jewish relatives, who are staunchly anti-Likud and anti-settlement, are not Anti-Semites.
