A touching story about Deval Patrick...

My daughter heard him relate this in a speech he gave when he was running for governor in MA:

Deval's family had very modest means but Deval earned a scholarship to a prestigious private prep school. The school had recommended that Deval bring a "jacket" with him prior to enrollment day. His parents dutifully went out and bought Deval a windbreaker, which to them was a jacket. They did not know that "jacket" was prep school-speak for "blazer." So Deval arrives proudly on campus with his windbreaker jacket, only to find out what a different world he has come from.

My daughter said that the audience let out a very sympathetic "Ohhhh...." and he quickly said "It's all right, it worked out OK" with a big smile...

I have treasured that story ever since she told me about it. She said so many in the audience, mostly female white liberals like herself, were moved to tears...

I think it shows that even his parents, as poor as they were, went out and bought that windbreaker to help him get ahead...and they just didn't know what was meant...with their limited means, it must have been a sacrifice...
