Facing growing concerns about his ability to win a Democratic primary next year, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis) asked Democratic county chairmen to sign a letter backing him for re-election.
The answer for many of them was no, the New Jersey Globe has learned.
Some of us have had enough of Jefferson Van Drew, one top Democrat told the Globe. Hes on his own now.
As a result, the letter never happened, according to six sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Van Drews opposition to the impeachment of President Donald Trump has become a significant political liability in New Jerseys 2nd district, where the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic party appear united in their opposition to Trump.
That doesnt mean Van Drew will necessarily lose party support as he prepares to seek a second term in Congress, but it is unusual for county chairmen to refuse to automatically endorse an incumbent.

(145,184 posts)It appears that Van Drew will not be the GOP nominee automatically if he switches parties. Even with trump's support, there is a very good chance that this idiot will lose in the GOP primary where there are already a number of long time republicans running.

With polling in his district showing he was facing an uphill climb for re-election the Democrat, who is considered fairly conservative and has opposed the impeachment of Trump, is expected to announce the switch soon with reports stating he has already informed his staffers of the imminent move.....
Van Drews political conversion doesnt necessarily mean hell be the GOP nominee. Three Republicans had already declared their candidacies for his seat. And while Trumps backing would be politically potent, it would have to overcome hard GOP feelings from decades of tough election battles against Van Drew.
One Republican vying for Van Drews seat wasted no time attacking the party-switcher, saying the lawmaker is trying to use South Jersey Republicans to cling onto his power.

Anyway, plenty of Dems are stepping up to run.
Brigid Callahan Harrison, a prominent political science professor, is expected to announce her bid for the Democratic congressional nomination in the 2nd district, several sources have told the New Jersey Globe.
Harrison had been considering a challenge to Rep. Jeff Van Drew in the Democratic primary. Van Drew is now switching parties and may seek re-election as a Republican.
Several other Democrats are actively considering a House bid, including Atlantic County Freeholder Ashley Bennett, Cumberland County Freeholder Jack Surrency, and West Cape May Commissioner John Francis III.
A well-known political pundit, Harrison has deep roots in Atlantic County. She lives in Longport and ran a strong race for freeholder in the 1990s. She is a former secretary of the Atlantic County Democratic organization.
