1,500 steel workers laid off two days after Trump says 'US steel mills are doing great'

A US steel mill in Detroit has shuttered, leaving around 1,500 people out of a job. Great Lakes Works will close its iron and steelmaking operations by April 1, just months after US Steel announced a temporary layoff of about 200 workers, CNN reports.

“We are conscious of the impact this decision will have on our employees, their families, and the local community, and we are announcing it now to provide them with as much time as possible to prepare for this transition,” CEO David Burritt said, according to CNN. “These decisions are never easy, nor are they taken lightly.”

The layoffs come just two days after President Trump claimed the industry was in great shape.

“Look at what I’ve done for steel,” Trump told an audience at Michigan rally on Wednesday. ‘I mean, the steel is back. We taxed all the dumb steel coming in from China and other places, and US steel mills are doing great — they’re expanding all over the country, and they were gonna be out of business within two years the way they were going.”

Any moron who votes for the MF again deserves all the pain and misery they get. Too bad there’s so much collateral damage to the rest of our country.

So many "vision-impaired" when their water is poisoned, their paths to alternative energy solutions against fossil fuel consequences in the air are blocked; their kids eat lead; their recreation areas and wildlife and infrastructure projects go underfunded and unprotected - Always SMH!

Corporate speak is so predictable. I guess PR has a playbook.

“We are conscious of the impact this decision will have on our employees, their families, and the local community, and we are announcing it now to provide them with as much time as possible to prepare for this transition,” CEO David Burritt said, according to CNN. “These decisions are never easy, nor are they taken lightly.”

Read: Screw 'em. Profit! Oh, and profit. More profit.

To be fair, the cannon of a corporate charter decrees that profit is god and everything else is subject to that. Corporations are legally bound to benefit their shareholders, which actually tend to be people and families that have controlling interests by way of shares. The corporate veil, (which, as we see, is rarely pierced) just shields them from accountability and liability from the negative impact the corporation creates in pursuit of said profit. Oh, and don't forget buybacks.

That's a concern and a problem, especially when it comes to our commons and the common good. Given a choice, profit is always going to be the deciding factor. PR tends to take care of the public perceptions when possible, you know, like a good coverup. Corporate speak is often a world of elaborate and creative stories that protect the profit margin.

I'll bet they're taken goddamned gleefully.

It means more money in the pockets of the decision-makers.

How about BIG bonuses even for belt tightening? Good job, Smith! Good job! More stock options coming your way. Promotions ahead.

I think the picture is supposed to be hand wringing, furrowed brows, pacing, sweating, holding back the tears, arguments, regret! Oh, if we could only keep these people on! Woe is we. So very sad. This is going to hurt us more than it hurts you. It's a heavy burden have to bear, pity us.

jobs who will finally get to taste for themselves the bullshit they've been peddling to others that they called "loafers who want free stuff". They''ll need health insurance and find out they can't afford the premiums of private insurance; they'll need food stamps to keep food on their tables and find out they don't qualify "because they don't have a job" and find themselves suddenly wondering how that even makes sense after watching Hannity cheer for it all the time. They'll wonder where the "great economy" is they have been hearing off the lips of Republicans while they cash in their retirement accounts to delay homelessness without a job.

Their old fantasy world is about to fall down all around them. Womp womp MAGAts, you now get to reap what you have sewn.
