Minor issue with the Trump-Zelensky call readout, but one that angers me to no end.
When Trump allegedly said to Zelensky, ""I would like you to do us a favor though because our country has been through a lot..."
Trump says "our country," meaning the United States of America.
He says this to the President of Ukraine.
In the past decade, Ukraine has:
--Had to deal with an extremely corrupt and Russian compromised former President named Viktor Yanukovych who literally stole billions out of the public's treasury;
--Saw a harrowing ordeal unfold when the people rose up in protest against Yanukovych, where over 100 protesters were shot dead by Yanukovych's authorities before he ultimately fled the country;
--Seen its sovereign territory in Crimea seized by Russian forces and then annexed into Russia, all in violation of long-standing treaties;
--Seen a bloody separatist war in the eastern portion of the country erupt, all fueled, aided and supported directly by Russia and resulting in approximately 14,000 deaths to date; and
--Had to deal with matters of corruption, economic instability and other headaches, much of it imposed by its unfriendly northern neighbor
And yet Trump is telling the leader of this country that it is his country, and not Ukraine, that "has been through a lot."
The only actual ordeal our country has suffered in the past few years is having Donald Trump himself occupy the Presidency and grossly abuse his powers and embarrass his people.
It's audacious to tell the leader of a beleaguered, less-powerful country that has suffered greatly by way of a man who Trump himself emulates to no end that it is the United States who has "been through a lot."
And it's even worse that he then demands Ukraine investigate a crazy theory that blames Ukraine itself for something that our intelligence community all agrees Russia did, which was to interfere in the 2016 elections. And if he doesn't, the status of the promised military aid is now in doubt.
Chutzpah. Just unbelievable chutzpah.
