A facebook post by a relative I'm not particularly close to... for obvious reasons. I've kept to my own on these issues on social media. I use it to keep in touch with nieces spread out all over. But I've had it up to my whatzit with this silliness.
So I Replied
A little more than half of Americans consistently vote for Democratic Party candidates, including me. I do so because I believe in the christian teachings of helping people in need, being fair, loving everyone equally, and working toward the best good for all mankind.
Your post signifies that you clearly have no respect for me, nor your neighbors, friends and family who differ with you on the solutions to the issues facing America. The only reason you are voting for Trump because of ugly spite. You are so hateful, that you'll put a man in office guaranteed to destroy the integrity of our elections rather than allow members of your own family to have a fair say in how this country is run.

I was at a funeral and the minister decried that young people are forsaking the church, I almost stood up and said that is because all you people teach is hating something, often things that people being hated can't change. When a young person that started in kindergarten with a gay kid and basically spent a large part of his or her life around that person is told at 17 that gay person is going to hell, that straight kid, in most cases, leave that church as soon as he or she turns 18 and never look back.

(36,509 posts)It's no longer a difference of opinion. It's a difference of values. It's republicans who are separating children from their parents. It's republicans that disenfranchise voters they disagree with. It's republicans who are working hard to take health care coverage away from Americans. The list goes on and it doesn't get any better. Their hypocrisy is breathtaking. There are no decent republicans.

SSDI is not meant to be an unemployment fund. It is for those who are truly disabled.
oldsoftie
(12,599 posts)You are correct; SSDI is much needed by those who ARE DISABLED. And we shouldnt have any problem with the govt weeding out the cheaters.
Apart from SSDI, the Sec 8 housing program is set up by the govt to make it damn near impossible to advance in life UNLESS you game the system. I've had tenants who did it and were able to move on and buy their own home. Following the rules, it would have never been possible.

(15,552 posts)I know someone that got fired from his job and he hired a lawyer that helped him get SSDI claiming he had mental health issues. He certainly had no physical disabilities. He was 60 at the time and just didn't want to work any longer.

(6,921 posts)don't necessarily make a person unemployable, but there are some that can make a person unemployable for certain jobs, and some which, if uncontrolled, can pretty well make a person unemployable for just about any job. Trusting someone with full-blown, uncontrolled bipolar disorder with almost any job responsibilities is not the greatest idea. (Bipolar which is being trated and controlled is different.) PTSD can also interfere with employment.
I'm not saying no one ever slips through the cracks. That is probably impossible to prevent, humans being human. But I have seen more people I thought deserved it turned down than I have seen people I didn't think deserved it slip through.
soldierant
(6,921 posts)It's just that should a RWNJ be smart enough to call me on the fact that SSDI is not necessarily paid in by the same peole who receive it, I don't have a good comeback handy. I do know how hard it is to get it and would never suspect that smeone did not deserve it.

(145,554 posts)I strongly disagree with the concept that the Democratic Party can nominate a weak candidate and have no problem beating trump. Most POTUS are re-elected unless there is an downturn in the economy. trump can easily be re-elected
Link to tweet
But there is no need to look for mystical explanations. There is a path to reelection for a president who never cracks 50 percent approval in polls that is entirely plausible. It's not because the normal dynamics of politics do not apply to Trump, but because they do.....
Once again, Trumps strategy is not about breaking precedent so much as exploiting advantages that have worked often for incumbent presidents. Incumbents usually lose when the economy is weak or they face ideological opposition from within their party neither of which is true for him.
Time and money not spent fighting for the nomination is a big advantage and it may not matter much that this advantage is offset by bleak national polls. The Trump team says in background interviews that it is making targeted efforts in 17 states, but a much smaller number will get the lions share of attention....
In sum, the Trump team can give cogent answers to the question How will Trump win? and they are faking it well (as skilled operatives usually do) if they dont actually believe what they are saying. But there are too many imponderable assumptions embedded in those answers for anyone but Trump partisans to embrace them as fully credible.
Earlier, I was hopeful that trump would kill the Obama recovery but it appears that trump may have a decent economy to run on. We cannot assume that trump can be easily beaten or that the Democratic Party can nominate anyone and expect to win in 2020.

(884 posts)Far too often, as the saying goes, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good (wo)men to do nothing.
I do not care what relation someone is to me, respect must be earned. Sadly, far too many give friends and loved ones a pass when it comes to things like this, and honestly, that's the primary reason that so much of this bullshit still exists.
Racists will never be shamed by the targets of their racism.
Homophobes will never be shamed by the LGBTQ movement.
Fascists will never be shamed by Socialists.
But racist, homophobic, or fascist-leaning FAMILY can (and must) sometimes be shamed by family, because almost always, we are the only ones who can shame them. The judgment of our family cuts much deeper than that of literally any other group on earth, for most people.
Personally, I have absolutely zero room in my life for any of the above, and I do not care what anyone's relationship to me is. Exhibit ANY of that shit with me, and you get an express one-way ticket to Gofuckyourselfistan.
