W.C. Fields is credited with once saying, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit."
America is up to its eyeballs in bullshit. Is there anyone that can shovel more bullshit than Rudy Giuliani? Donald Trump may be a close second?
Even the "religious" people are caught up in this shitstorm. The so-called "Evangelicals" sold their souls for a couple of shovelfuls of bullshit. They convinced themselves they were looking at the big picture - they were getting judges. They sold out.
The lies have become brazen. They whine and moan about how Nancy Pelosi is holding up the Articles of Impeachment from reaching the US Senate. They hesitate to mention that they received Articles of Impeachment on Bill Clinton on the 19th of December and did not address them until they returned from the holidays on January 6th of the following year.
So, they are lying. They are doing the backstroke in an ocean of bullshit.
Just my opinion.

(6,070 posts)When the evangelicals start to demonstrate that they are following Jesus' doctrine as he taught it.
Not when some "would-be christian" takes the teaching and bends them for a political reason...then I will believe something has changed. Until then it all appears to me to be a tool of the RW republican agenda.
For example you celebrate his administrations judicial appointments or its advocacy of life, family, and religious liberty.
Really tell that to the families that have been torn apart by his evil policies.
Or the folks who will face one of the RW judges he has appointed.
Nice try but I believe as a movement the evangelicals seems to be driven more by hate than compassion.

(2,049 posts)This sums up the dilemma of the evangelical Christian single issue voter in the Age of Trump in a nutshell. All GOP politicians, no matter how immoral and corrupt, know they can get the evangelical vote if they promise to do all they can to ban abortion, which starts, I suppose, by appointing all the right judges to federal courts. You can violate all the Ten Commandments - every single one of them, and make a total mockery of supposed Christian family values, if you promise to do all you can to ban abortion. Trump has made that promise - even though he is really, in his heart of hearts, a liberal, pro-choice guy, and - who knows? could well have had at least one hush-hush abortion in his past - but he really NEEDS the evangelical vote to even get within stealing distance of the presidency - with Russian help, of course. Both have sold their souls and compromised on everything else to get what they want.

(42,478 posts)17 Angry Democrats have done this impeachment. They use all this airtight logic, and frame the argument with numbers (17), logic, history (Clinton impeachment). Here's an example used to defend a GOP Congressman's "Nay" vote on impeachment. Look at the comments: https://www.newhopefreepress.com/2019/12/17/congressman-fitzpatrick-says-he-will-not-vote-for-impeachment/
So yes, Americans are confused because they are fed lies. And you can't convince people unless you convince them everybody's lying, which also rubs off on Democrats and their program for America. So we have work to do.

(6,252 posts)I heard this from a very good Christian woman right after he was elected. I never quite understood how such a good, decent woman could support Trump. They profess to believe God made Trump President for a reason but dont apply the same reasoning to issues they dont like. Well if God made Trump president then God made people to be LGBT, made abortion doctors etc. If they are right that God made Trump for a reason, lets hope that reason is to bury these far-right radicals forever. That after Trump there will be a progressive revolution that will fix the structural problems with America. That America will never again be held hostage by these Republican terrorists. If Gods hand is in this mess we are in then conservatism is finished forever and American will emerge a better nation. So lets hope God made Trump President for a reason, to destroy the Republican Party.

(14,480 posts)Far too many Americans are outsourcing their thinking to other people they don't even know and have not checked that invisible yapper's credentials......"others" meaning talk radio personalities, preachers, internet blog hosts, some smart-ass on Twitter or a charismatic dude at the local bar.
Everything is going per plan for the oligarchs and plutocrats and the methods are right out of a Soviet propagandist's playbook used for many decades - sew discord, confusion and fear until no one recognizes truth. That then puts them into position to declare what truth is.

(561 posts)I'm talking within days. Background: When the NFL flag kneeling criticism set in called operation division, the maga owner canceled his NFL package and business tanked. Then EVERBODY goes to the bigger local Country Bar for 50 screen TVs and business, is business, in this military town doesn't matter your politics. Dumb move on cancelling the NFL package for the local maga bar.
Back to the local maga pub just yesterday. They know I'm lib in their minds but I give them the, "but I'm a Reagan Democrat" routine and they accept me and I tip the waitresses nicely but now I notice their talk about emperor Trump is quieter. The maga bar owner even gave me a like on a fake book cartoon about Trump. So I see this change happening. I have a close neighbor down the street, we go fishing together. He said his staunch maga brother in-law at Thanksgiving said bro in law said Trump ain't his president no more! I'm seeing less fake book rusky ads. We're in season for ads! This is good! However, don't gloat! Like Pelosi said don't do it. I say, it makes their feeling hurt if you laugh at them or scorn them now that he's impeached. I'm hearing the technical arguments already, saying that he's not really impeached, says a guy on the corner. Within the past few months, TVs now include MSNBC and CNN. They are talking about getting the NFL package back.
Things are changing. Don't gloat. Let them down softly, but politically punish those who shaped their thinking with fake book psycographics the lies and the whole bit. A new year approaches. I see light!

(1,829 posts)My brother was a serious WC Fields fanatic(*), and a little of it rubbed off on me. And this quote does not sound like him. I'm going to need references to believe this is a real Fields quote.
A quick google turns up at least one source that agrees with me:

Etymology
Misattributed to W.C. Fields. Original source unknown.
