Last night. Yes it got a tad bit heated. He told me there was not enough evidence to impeach. And that the Dems should have gone to court to enforce witness subpoenas, blah, blah, blah. Then I whipped out the ace: I said keep all the facts just as they are and substitute the name Obama for trump; would you and the republicans be for impeachment? 🦗🦗🦗. No answer, blank face, new topic.

Really, Nixon was held accountable but when Ollie North and his goons were running around selling drugs to fund an illegal incursion, ... SNORE

(11,736 posts)I totally agree that Reagan was the zenith, but I think that while Nixon did choose to resign with the tapes issue during Watergate, I think that he got away with a much bigger crime for how he got into office.
The Chennault Affair, and perhaps some of this is on LBJ for not telling, but I mean, with something this big other people had to know. It wasn't just Nixon in a room with Anna Chennault who pressured the Vietnamese to pull out of the peace talks to damage the Democratic Party's chances in 68. That extended the war another 5 years and caused many more American and Vietnamese lives.
Also, it wasn't just North and goons, it was Poindexter, Weinberger, GHW Bush, and Bill Barr. The Reagan campaign, like the Nixon campaign before them, conspired with a foreign power, this time Iran, to help win an election, by making a deal to sell arms. Even though Iran was under an embargo and considered a state sponsor of terror. They then took the money from the arms sales and funneled it, also illegal via the Boland Amendment, to fund right wing death squads in Nicaragua.

(3,240 posts)noticed all the cars in the parking lots of churches last night while we were on our way to our own church's Christmas eve service. Instead of realizing that church parking have always filled up on Christmas eve, she literally thanked Trump for making it possible to openly celebrate Christmas again. I didn't say anything to spoil Christmas eve for the family, but it really sickens me that she has been so brain washed.

(239 posts)I got into an argument with a wingnut online who insisted that Obama signed an Executive Order that said Chaplains in the military were forbidden to say the name Jesus or display a cross in the sanctuary. Even during a church service! Muslim Chaplains however were allowed to say Allah and display the Muslin crescent. But Trump vacated that order.
I told him that was ludicrous and Obama couldn't have done it even if he wanted to. I then went on to explain the First Amendment to him about freedom of religion and freedom of speech but he still insisted that Obama did it. I then told him to show me some proof of this Executive Order but of course he couldn't come up with anything. He just "heard it from someone." I swear these MAGA types will believe anything! What a bunch of morons!

(9,426 posts)was not released. What was released was Barr and tRump's version of the call. This amounts to selective transcript. Much like the Mueller report was not fully released, only very redacted sections of it were released. Why are citizens being lied to and kept in the dark about what this crew of Russian agents is really up to? There is not a single honorable member in the gop, one who truly believes that a president should be above reproach. They are all in lock step behind the worst person EVER to be installed in the WH. He is not, nor ever will be qualified. Not enough on the job training to make this dumb person presidential. Now he is wallowing down in his golden whorehouse in Florida, with lots of Russian mafia types. Those are his kind of people.

(6,829 posts)of his perfect conversation. To most of us, a transcript is an exact copy of what was said. Like what a stenographer would produce from a recording. This is a SUMMARY, not a transcript! Who the hell knows the exact content after being edited and censored by Barr and his other twisted pricks?
Americans have A RIGHT to listen to the original recording. This transcript is very well executed MISINFORMATION!

That was it, somehow. 5 innocent children dying in Trump's detention camps didn't soak the thick skull before. The murder of Heather at the Charlottesville hate rally didn't phase her.
Somehow, this got through, and I believe it was partially because she noticed I brought up the article on a Fox Noise website.
She's been walking around glazed and seriously re-evaluating her stance ever since. She actually said "What if that had been (by name, my child)"

(12,809 posts)I got the impression your magat acquaintance may be harboring the notion that if the Senate does not actually remove Trump then that nullifies the impeachment rendered by the House. It does not. Trump is an impeached President, no matter what the Senate does now. I bet magats (and all Republicans) are quite definite in their feelings about Bill Clinton's having been impeached in the 90's, and yet he was not also removed by the Senate. Senate acquittal doesn't change the "impeached" status, no matter the political party. Sorry, magats - Trump is already impeached.

(21,447 posts)right so I stopped talking politics with him several years ago. These days, the only communication we have is 3 times a year, through greeting cards at Christmas and his b-day and mine. He used to have me on an e-mail list to receive RW talking points but I only responded once, to gently question something. The messages stopped coming. Since we live several hundred miles apart and I refuse to talk politics, he does not know that I volunteered locally on both of Obama's campaigns. I even visited him once during that time but never brought it up. He refers to his wife, children, and grandchilfren as his Klan.
A cousin I used to be close with in childhood has become far right, but his father is a staunch Dem. I kept in touch with the cousin and avoided politics until the time we were both visiting his father, who insisted on arguing politics. I agreed with my uncle a couole times while there. The next time I spoke to the cousin by phone, he cut the conversation short. Hasn't contacted me since and does not respond if I contact him.
I remember teachers telling us how the Civil War divided families as well as the states. Now we get to see that for ourselves.
