Its annoying that after paying to see a movie at a theater, we are subjected to a string of commercials.
Someone ought to start a writing campaign. it annoys me. And probably annoys a bunch of other people too.
Whippersnappers, it used to be the theaters didnt do that. Theyd show a cartoon before the movie.
Or newsreelsI can just barely remember that.
Newsreels would never make a comeback, because theres so many other ways we can get News nowadays. But gee, a cartoon, anything but a bunch of stupid commercials.

(13,895 posts)I just saw "Ford vs Ferrari" at the movie theater yesterday. Started at 6 pm and had ½ hour of commercials... uff..... The actual movie started at 6:30... Next time I"ll come ½ hour later. I got the tickets on line and had pre selected seats so placement is not a problem..

(146,288 posts)Previews of coming attractions are ads, but that's a different thing. If the theater you go to has ads, try some other ones. You can even call ahead to find out if a particular theater shows ads.
My wife and I went to the latest "Star Wars" movie yesterday. The theater we went to showed no ads at all. That's why we go to that theater. My review of the movie? It was a "Star Wars" movie. I didn't expect anything beyond an action-filled Space Cowboy film. I got just what I expected. That's the point of the entire series, really. I liked it. My wife, not as much.
Xolodno
(6,390 posts)It is not a Space Cowboy film!
Its a cheesy Flash Gordon movie. And my wife and I liked it...but then, after The Last Jedi, I enjoy the Phantom Menace now.....

(5,225 posts)we went to the movies as our family won't arrive here til Friday. As we sat down with two small cokes and a small popcorn, we calculated we'd spent $50.00 on this movie! Then we had to sit through half an hour of commercials and then another 19 movie trailers for films coming next summer! Don't think we'll go back any time soon. Sticking to movies on Netflix at home. BTW.....saw Bombshell, a story of how crazy Fox News is and Roger Ailes. Recommended

(81,468 posts)Your car may soon serve you ads how about a pizza?
Heres what you do in your spanking new, internet-connected car when you approach a red or yellow light: slow down way ahead, creep forward slowly and make sure you never come to a stop.
Heres why you do it: If you stop moving, your car will start serving you ads on the dashboard, maybe for anti-itch cream because it knows youre going shopping after a hike in poison oak country.
Santa Clara auto-tech firm Telenav has just announced an in-car advertising platform for cars that connect to the internet.
Auto makers including Toyota, Lexus, Ford, GM and Cadillac already use the companys connected-car products, the spokeswoman said.
Telenav CEO H.P. Jin in a press release called the ad platform an exciting new opportunity for vehicle manufacturers to monetize connectivity to cover service costs and even drive healthy profits while enriching the consumer experience with safely delivered, engaging and relevant offers.

(28,789 posts)we hear so much about the bad results for ordinary Americans coming from Wall Street, but Madison Avenue is taking its own pound of flesh.
I'm 64 with a 2012 car and no connectivity. i plan to take care of the car and leave it to my son.
i have boycotted items since the 1970s because of their ads. especially the ones that are demeaning toward women. Remember ring around the collar? the sweaty slob of a man looks at his guilty wife and she gets the blame for ring around the collar? never bought Whisk in my life. Remember ladies, please don't squeeze the charmin? and women are fighting over it?! never bought a package of charmin in my life.
aargh. i hate commercials.

(82,383 posts)may as well wait, so unless you just have to see the latest movie, you could just wait for it to be shown on TV or the many platforms that now exist.

(10,869 posts)It's a classic small town theater run by the local movie buff who had a video store in the 90s. He starts each showing with a short talk about coming movies he plans to bring, and talks about the highlights in the movie. We all support him in our small town, and would never think to sneak in snacks because we know that's how he makes a living. The tickets only cover the cost of the movie.

I used the time to play spider solitaire on my phone.
We saw Bombshell. Overall, i wish it was more about Gretchen than Megan-centric.
So I give it a B. Acting was A+.
Since I can count on one hand the number of times Ive watched Fox News - I learned a lot I didnt know about the organization. Horrid place to work.

(12,265 posts)I guess it has been a while since we went to a movie because we sat through 40 minutes of ads and trailers. My husband has no patience for that, he clicks away from commercials on tv so this was not going to happen. He left after 5 minutes and told me to text him when the movie started. He went out into the lobby and answered emails.

(11,457 posts)Advertisements and previews we were there a whole hour longer!
Last summer in Ireland I went to movies one day in Killarney, they had same area for buying snacks, popcorn and candy but when I got to movie it just started! Not one advertisement or preview, it was great.
And they had long line for people buying snacks so they didnt need to beg for it.

(10,136 posts)Directv's on-demand downloads: they only had 4 different ones and repeated them - often the same one several times in a row. And no way to skip them. I got so annoyed with the Susan Komen one that I was considering cancelling my yearly mammogram after the 19th time it ran

(7,134 posts)Ads popping up everywhere they didn't used to be, and since they're all trying to grab and hold your attention, they are more and more obnoxious.
I recently stopped listening to NPR News because of the ridiculous ads they started to work into the start, middle, and end of the broadcast.

(13,485 posts)In Europe, the ads are part of the entertainment and part of going to the movies is watching the ads. But the European ads are so much more entertaining, ours suck.
Our subliminal adverts are what I hate. Their the ones that are meant to make you hungry or thirsty so you'll buy at the concession.

(31,261 posts)But even when I went more regularly, I was not opposed to paying fair value. When I went, I got one small drink and popcorn, that was enough for me since I had dinner before or after the movie.
I am honestly put out by what I see as people wanting everything on the cheap. Restaurants can't survive because the same people that demand workers get at least $15 per hour also don't want to pay $40-$50 for a good meal. Movie theaters can't survive because people want to see 4-5 movies per month and not pay more than $40 for the priviledge. People want great roads but don't want to pay gas taxes. What ticks me off is the general cheapness of people. For my own needs and values, I try to make a determination of whether a price is fair, if it is fair, I pay it without complaint, if it is not fair, I don't do business at the establishment again. If a good movie theater needs higher ticket prices to survive, then I pay what it asks as long as I feel the value is there.

(31,261 posts)The theater complex that I went to charged fairly for the tickets, it wasn't cheap, but neither was it eye-gouging.
When I go to a movie or a restaurant, I never take in anything. The closest that I have come to something like that was in an airport, I ordered a burger and fries with plenty of time, the restaurant was incredibly slow, my plane was boarding when they finally came out with the burger and fries but not the drink that I had ordered and paid for, I told them to just ignore the drink and ran an caught the plane. Fortunately I was in business class so boarding was at my convenience. I did feel like an idiot eating on the plane, I had allowed more than enough time to get the food before the flight came close to boarding. To this day I don't understand why the restaurant service was so glacially slow.

(6,390 posts)If they had it, I would probably go to the movies more often. Nothing worse than having to hit the restroom and miss something important. Hence I wait for most movies a few months later to watch on the comfort of my couch, pause it when I need to, etc.
It takes something like Star Wars to go to the theater, and then watch it on IMAX 3D.

(15,241 posts)I'd rather get my information and entertainment through internet programs that I want to watch - on my own schedule from wherever I want.
That I can pause for bladder breaks, cooking up some nachos, whatever.
That I can mute because of the inanity.
Without sticky floors and stinky seats.
I loved movies as a kid. Maybe the last good one was "Cinema Paradiso" - ironically about showing movies in the good old days.

(82,383 posts)You pay for it and on any talking channel, they have ads.
On music channels, they have ads or personalities talking in ads about other stations or concerts or just talking when the whole point was to listen to music without ads and talking. Or the usual fans calling in to talk or interviews or other non-music.
