Apple came home with no awards and a punch to the gut after Sundays Golden Globe Awards.
Comedian Ricky Gervais, who hosted the event, used Apples nominations for The Morning Show as an opportunity to skewer the company over its business dealings. The series, which premiered last year on the new streaming service Apple TV+ and follows a morning news show that becomes embroiled in workplace scandal, was nominated for best television series drama and received two nominations for best performance by an actress in a television drama series.
Apple rolled into the TV game with a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China, Gervais said as the camera panned to Apple CEO Tim Cook in the audience. So, you say youre woke, but the companies you work for, unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, youd call your agent, wouldnt you?
<snip>
If you do win an award tonight, dont use it as a platform to make a political speech, Gervais said. Youre not in a position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real-world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and f--- off.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Youre not in a position to lecture the public about anything

(5,719 posts)This was an attack on everybody in Hollywood who are willing to sell their souls to the highest bidder in order to get their next gig. That the camera was on Tim Cook does not mean the Gervais comments were directed at him specifically.
on edit, here's a clip of that part of the monologue: https://streamable.com/zclft

(24,926 posts)He was spot on all night. The only joke he said that I thought crossed the line was his joke about not hiring women directors.

Makes sense to me.

(52,206 posts)somehow nearly all of the profit is in the form of licensing fees to apple ireland, which now owns most of apple's patents.
6,000 employees there.
apple routinely transfers patents to an irish division, probably for $1, or in any event, clearly massively undervalued. then they pay apple ireland massive licensing fees to use those patents.
to the lay person, this is blatant tax evasion through transfer pricing, but i'm sure apple has an army of lawyers who know what's legal. well, who know what they can get away with....

I guess they think everyone that ever received an award is a liberal.

(5,557 posts)We liked his targeting of Cook and the big business side of Hollywood, so we are talking about it
Conservatives liked his targeting of Hollywood activism, so they are talking about that.
In a way it is a testament to the evenhandedness of his cutting humor.
I loved it
