The findings come from a Washington Post-Ipsos poll of African Americans nationwide, which reveals fears about whether their children will have a fair shot to succeed and a belief that white Americans dont fully appreciate the discrimination that black people experience...
More than 8 in 10 black Americans say they believe Trump is a racist and that he has made racism a bigger problem in the country. Nine in 10 disapprove of his job performance overall.
The pessimism goes well beyond assessments of the president. A 65 percent majority of African Americans say it is a bad time to be a black person in America. That view is widely shared by clear majorities of black adults across income, generational and political lines. By contrast, 77 percent of black Americans say it is a good time to be a white person, with a wide majority saying white people dont understand the discrimination faced by black Americans.
As a black person, youve always seen all the racism, the microaggressions, but as white people they don't understand this is how things are going for me, said Tate, who said he is the only black male teacher in his school. They dont live those experiences. They dont live in those neighborhoods. They moved out. Its so easy to be white and oblivious in this country.
Francine Cartwright, a 44-year-old mother of three from Moorestown, N.J., said the ascent of Trump has altered the way she thinks about the white people in her life.
If Im in a room with white women, I know that 50 percent of them voted for Trump and they believe in his ideas, said Cartwright, a university researcher. I look at them and think, How do you see me? What is my humanity to you??

This article raises an important point: for black Americans, the age of Trump hasn't just frustrated us about the direction of the country, but it also has changed how we feel about our place here and how we are seen and treated by our fellow Americans. I fear the social and psychic damage being done to us, not only by Trump himself, but by people we must live and work with whom we no longer can trust or feel safe among.

(102,236 posts)Still, given Trump is a cult leader, it is heartening to see that few AA's are susceptible.
Should be 100% reporting he is racist, but I'll take the 80% as reassuring. Some of those young enough to have not lived through the worst of racist America may be more willing to give benefit-of-the-doubt. (They really should listen to their elders).

(82,849 posts)But how many features of voters turned off by Trump have you seen recently? They're pretty few and far between. Though I have to take exception to the opening Trump quote to the black community the Post bowdlerized. He actually said, "What the hell have you got to lose?"

still - glad to see the constant Trump talking point of low African American unemployment hasn't had an effect.

(18,486 posts)The lies aren't for black people - even Trump knows we know better. The lies are to convince gullible white people they don't actively support a degenerate racist.

(61,599 posts)Trump's appeal has AWAYS centered around racism, xenophobia and bigotry.
He announced his candidacy by demonizing immigrants from Mexico. Trump called them rapists and murderers. Nothing subtle there.
One of Trump's first acts as President was to prevent Muslims from entering the country. Not subtle at all.
We puzzle over why a voter could say they support Democratic candidates with widely different platforms but then vote for Trump. The answer is obvious. These voters are picking white men whose platforms seem to align with the voters' personal beliefs about race and immigration.
Many white voters are looking for racists to support. Believe it. They keep telling us.
