...we proved trump was a criminal (with facts and evidence) and that republicans have bestowed trump with dictatorial powers to undermine our future elections and more...
...as facts, witnesses and evidence emerge, Democrats will now have the opportunity to discuss this at length with conviction and credibility going forward to November...
...impeachment has demonstrate in the public mind a very important fact,
...the Democratic Party is not only on the right side of history, the Constitution and America with impeachment, we're strong enough and fearless enough to challenge the autocratic and dictatorial rule of trump and the republicans...we're more than capable in image and grit...
...to have done nothing would have displayed weakness, fear and cowardness in the face of trump's impeachable acts and agression
...thanks to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Representative Adam Schiff and the brave group of Managers, we have conclusively demonstrated that we are not only the Party of true American values, the Constitution and American freedom, we are the Party capable and willing to kick trump's ass and hold him accountable...
Was impeachment worth it?
...IMO, more than worth it....
...what do you say?

(5,328 posts)The suppression of witnesses, documents, and evidence; and the deeply incoherent and flagrantly illogical arguments, all serve to expose the depths to which the Republican party has sunk, and the Democratic nominee, whomever it is, will benefit by exploiting that. Republicans who claim moral values need to be alerted that they aren't being asked to leave the GOP, but to acknowledge that the GOP has left them.

(25,973 posts)Perhaps more than any previous impeachment (counting Nixons near-impeachment), this one addressed an existential threat to democracy itself. It had to be done. In the near term, impeachment has revealed republicans as mercenary, lock-step enablers of the worst despot to ever come down the pike. Their unwillingness to even go through the motions of fulfilling their duty is a gift to our candidates.

Imagine how people felt in the years just before and during the Civil War.
Easier for me to imagine is the Depression followed by WW2, since those were in my parents' lifetimes and I heard so much about it growing up, not just from them, but from teachers, books, films, etc.
In the Civil War, we had Lincoln. In the Depression and WW2, we had FDR. Today, we have Pelosi, Schiff, Nadler, and Schumer. We will get through this. It will not be easy, and I think it will be quite ugly at times, but we will make it.

These folks live for vengeance their over-active amygdalas have been stimulated even more than usual. The fence-sitters have been shaken off, and I don't think that is a Good Thing for November. The need for internal consistency (IOW the need to vote again the way they did before instead of acknowledging that they made a mistake in 2016) will easily override any facts dug up and proven precisely because of the binary nature of 'guilty/innocent (*NOT* "Not guilty" as lawyers try, futilely to explain it) that nearly every person who is not a lawyer applies to any trial
And expect every Democratic president to be impeached any time the Republicans have a majority in the house from now on.
Morally justified? Sure. Important in the larger historical context? Perhaps. Strategically damaging to the Republican party long-term? Possibly.
Nasruddin
(754 posts)Not sure about the races, tho. I think it might be a wash for Mr Trump - he will win or lose based on everything.
I wonder about the Senate. The Dems need to concentrate on this & get to a majority. Maybe they should even forget about the presidency unless they identify a good psychopathic candidate (God help us). Control of Senate votes controls what the president can do. The Republican senators have been ID'd as cult members and leeches. Does that have any consequences anywhere? Enough to tip a few races and pull the majority away from the Republicans?

(27 posts)That argument might make sense to me if impeachment were entirely political driven and Trump was perceived as a victim.
Most in the criminal organization known as the GOP admits his actions (now acknowledged as true) were subject to censor and inappropriate. A poll had 75% wanting witnesses to testify. Vengeance at would not be the normal reaction in my humble opinion.
Just like the Mob would take vengeance on you or me for going to the cops.

(754 posts)On the con side, it accomplished nothing of substance
Mr Trump is now enabled to run foreign policy as a corruption machine for himself, there are no consequences
He will also be enabled to take revenge - he's as spiteful as can be & everyone who acted against him is now going to face the music from Barr's Justice department.
The validity of the elections coming up is in more doubt
On the pro side, it ties the Republican party firmly to Mr Trump.
(this has a con side as well - there will be zero dissent on anything)
Generally people don't like Trumpism, but it matters a lot where (which states) this is, & it's only the first of Feb - lots of things are going to happen between now & Nov
Everything now depends on the upcoming election & Mr Trump's declining health. The Democrats should pay more attention to the Senate than the presidency. Unless they plan to take advantage of this presidential precedent. (Who's the logical choice for that direction?)

If for no other reason as the proverbial message in a bottle to the future. We stuck a flag in the sand.
We did that on the moon, too. And shit - maybe that flag will go unseen for generations or however long itll take us to get back up there in future space expeditions.
We left a mark. Forever and for all time. And we had to. We had to do that. And we had to do this, too. We left this flag planted in the sand of the pages of history books in the future. Where perhaps cooler heads and more clear-eyed analysis and understanding can learn from it.
We needed to leave a mark on donald trump. WE needed to BRAND HIM. After all, hes the guy who wants his name on everything in huge gold-colored letters everywhere, in much the same way as a dog will want to pee on everything to mark its territory as its own. So WE have now peed on his brand. His name and his almighty brand will from now on carry the mark of IMPEACHED. Hell ALWAYS carry that mark whether he likes it or not. Hell always be listed in the membership of that exclusive club. And NOTHING will change that or erase that or excuse OR lie it away. NOTHING.
Even a Senate vote to acquit wont change that. Wont make that blemish go away. Wont change that reality. Or that absolute (and, mind you, NOT alternative) FACT. The IMPEACHMENT stands. As Speaker Pelosi said - impeachment is forever.
Period. End of sentence. Full stop.

(9,670 posts)We all knew going in that the GOP would obstruct and obfuscate.
Impeachment was carried out because, in light of the crimes and the conspiracy to commit crimes, we had a constitutional imperative to proceed.
It is apparent, however, the the impeachment mechanism created in the Constitution is woefully inadequate in these days of partisan politics and entertainment-driven news.
I don't even understand the apparent straw man here.
The question is, was impeachment worth it?
"worth" can only be presumed to mean some value was produced that outweighed it, presumably the cost.
Right now, in doubt (& probably no, in my opinion, but I can hope to be wrong).
I thought the general ineffectiveness of the impeachment process was a well - known defect of our system long before this particular fiasco.

(11,744 posts)We have to do 2 very important things this campaign season.
The first is to not back down on the message that the GOP is corrupt and has sided with a criminal rather than the foundations of this nation: the rule of law, that no person is above the law, and that Americans stand united against foreign adversaries despite domestic differences. Republicans have defended Russia, more than they have defended the Constitution. They have allowed their own Constitutional power to be severely eroded to assist a man who does not give one squirt of piss about them and would sell all of us out for profit.
Second and equally important, we have to give voters something to vote FOR. We cannot rely on showing what scumbags Trump and the Republicans are. Most people know that. Trump supporters likely know it, but they don't care because they feel that Trump is giving them something (if only the permission to be the assholes they have always been). We all know it. The significant block of people who can but do not vote know it too. The problem with this last group is that they likely think that Democrats are okay and all, but won't do anything to really make change and improve their lives. Saying and proving that Trump and the GOP are scum, will likely not really motivate them. We need to have clear, easy to understand policies that will help them and not just keep benefiting the richest people.
The Impeachment is important and the trial is important in solidifying the first part of this equation, but we will need more to win in November.

Roberts would always rule with the other 4 Russian Repug SCOTUS (in)justices because he is part of the Russian Repug right wing cabal. The way the vote went down shows it and shows their hand. They are saving Roberts now so he can (not) surprisingly rule that the thief of the office can do any fucking thing he wants - only in much nicer language and not until after the election. The constitution has been shredded, only they will continue to lie & pretend they care about our laws - but only to use them again if any Democrat ever overcomes their hacking and vote suppression. (2,966 posts)It was worth it for all the reasons you've stated. I belong to a group called Tell Them Tuesday which has held protests in front of Lindsey Graham's Greenville, SC office every single Tuesday since January 24, 2017. In July we added Saturdays as well and I'm one of the organizers of those protests. It's been a hard three years and I have to admit, I'm tired. However, I've just committed to precinct reorganization and pledged to myself to work like a fiend from hell to get out the vote and kick Trump, Lindsey, and Mitch out on their sorry asses. I want to know, at the end of the day, that I've done as much as I could to keep the country I love free.
