They have a huge job. cyberswede's post about the President's speech in Iowa City, and about how the Secret Service took over a nearby building overlooking the podium, gave me chills. The depth of the security they have to provide is astounding.
When our President goes anywhere, he is vulnerable, and the Secret Service must be extremely thorough. All those stops in cafes or bars for a beer have to be secure. How about travel overseas? How about in a huge arena? I have to say, that our President's security came to mind when he was elected, there's too much hatred out there. Our Secret Service does a fantastic job.

(332 posts)I have a high school classmate who was in the Secret Service during Big Dog's era, and while she didn't give any great detail, I do know that they had ALL of their bases covered for ANYTHING.
When Smokin' Joe came to Suffolk, VA back in 2008, there were Secret Service snipers on the rooftops, BOTH uniformed and plain clothed agents inside the buildings, scores of local and federal police watching EVERYBODY. If you were dumb enough to even look like you might try something...let's just say you'll be handled in a heartbeat!
So for these fools posting bullshit on Twitter, I can only shake my head--you do NOT want the Secret Service paying you a home visit !!! THEY. DON'T. PLAY.

(6,996 posts)At his campaign stops he goes down into the crowd after his speech to shake hands and greet the folks. C-span cameras stay on him longer than the cable shows do. I counted 12 big, very serious looking guys surrounding him.
