Yes, some of us know the meanings of the abbreviations that people use at DU. (Democratic Underground) But we see new ones all the time that are hard to figure out. I saw one today (PBO), and couldn't figure that one out. I just looked that up, and pbo has to do with lead oxide, or some baseball organization in Palos Hills Illinois.. ( check out those letters, ... pbo)..
...It turns out that PBO stands for President Barack Obama. I hadn't seen that one, but there are many that people don't know. Never assume that everyone knows the meaning of whatever abbreviation you use. If you got this far, I thank you for reading this. Today is Feb. 15, 2020...(Feb. stands for February)

(102,236 posts)are those (speaking) who use the acronym rather than saying the actual term--even (and especially) when the acronym has more syllables and thus is longer to say than the actual term.
Drives me NUTs.

(25,853 posts)what I think are very obscure abbreviations. And I'm here every day.
Many years ago, in my very first job as a nurse's aide, I was chastised for using an abbreviation we employees used all the time to a patient. It was pointed out that someone who didn't work there would have no way of knowing what I meant what I referred to the little CS.
It was a good lesson, and it's stayed with me all these years.
Oh, that's right, you likewise don't have a clue. It was the little central supply, the satellite one we had in our part of the hospital, as compared to the main CS, the main central supply.

Did run into "mas" today and it took me a huge effort to decipher it as "milli-arc-second". Upwards of 15 seconds, no more than 20, but I swear, it felt much longer--maybe the eternity of as much as 30 or 35 seconds.

(3,568 posts)say it completely. Ain't gonna kill ya. More than once? Go ahead and abbreviate, but the first time you should parenthetically spell it out.

(90,674 posts)Acronyms didn't start with texting -- tho I am sure texting and twitting have made it worse.
