A-K and L-Z

This morning’s trip to the post office in a neighboring village had me looking for crows going and thinking about unity coming.

The post office sits near the top of Main Street in one of the most beautiful villages in Vermont. A long hill on each side, American flags everywhere, tractors, cows, old, old maple trees, a library with occasional free movies, the school. Most of the village houses have antique white clapboards or gorgeous old bricks. It looks like yesteryear.

The sign on the door at the end of the post office path caught my attention. In giant letters, A-K and L-Z. Instructions on who brings what to the lunch after Town Meeting. A-K brings a main dish, L-Z brings a side dish or salad. Democracy first, followed by unity with a pot-luck.

After a lengthy pause, I went through the door and noticed a table scattered with acts of kindness. Need a couple egg cartons? Want a free zucchini? Would these new socks fit you? Here’s a jigsaw puzzle. Life at its finest, love at its random-est.

Some of the most glorious days are those when I accidentally stumble over examples of simple human kindness. People living their values, doing the right thing when nobody is watching. Sometimes it’s a struggle to remember how many good people are out there, but remember we must.

I hope after the voting is over in this upcoming election, we can stand A-K and L-Z in pot-luck unity.

And your beautifully written piece painted a picture I needed. Noticing what's around us and thinking about a world full of good people.

Too bad that people in larger places seem to have lost that simple, good hearted, help you neighbors that is so apparent here. What a great place to live that must be. So much hatred has been spread all over this county. I hope these villagers keep this sense of all helping each other. Thanks for posting, amid the insanity the rest of the country is experiencing.
