What actually happened:
If they will lie about little things, they will lie about big things. Take that to the bank!

(135,425 posts)the stupid bits of cardboard were already laid out on the chairs--the guy did his report with the stupid cards, propped up on the seats, right behind him.
They aren't even trying to look honest OR smart! People do check this shit--but they are running this campaign like it's the fifties, and Queen Ann IS Donna Reed!

(50,326 posts)Why even lie about this, it makes NO sense. One expects some campaign organization on stuff like this and I doubt anyone gave this a thought as to how it came about yet the Romney/Ryan campaign had to lie about something so obvious and easily proved. Bizarre, truly bizarre.
It shows, yet again, there is an almost pathological proclivity to lie, from the candidates themselves down and through out the campaign staff. Wow, just wow.

(8,646 posts)I agree. Their lying is pathological. The true mark of a compulsive liar is that they lie when it's unnecessary to lie. The whole campaign seems to be made up of compulsive liars (and that includes Mitt).

.."Those three words -- "the truth matters" -- drew a hearty response. In context, the First Lady wasn't going after anyone in particular, and she didn't accuse anyone, even indirectly, of dishonesty. But I suspect people applauded not just because it's worthwhile maxim, but because this year, it seems clear there are some who believe the truth doesn't matter.
Consider, for example, the 33rd installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt's mendacity. This week's list is considerably shorter than usual because Mitt Romney spent several days out of the public eye, preparing for next month's debates. It does not include the media availability he did this morning (I haven't seen the transcript yet)."
Much More..

(135,425 posts)in an EMPTY stadium with the reporter standing in front of the empty seats with the cardboard on each chair, spelling out MITT. The anchorman in the studio was even joking with the guy doing the standup... "What's that behind you (fill in name of reporter)?"

(13,776 posts)Maybe the organization of those cards was retroactively spontaneous.
MADem
(135,425 posts)the empty stadium, and they were joking about the cards on the chairs. They'll definitely have it--of course, they are an ABC affiliate, they might get proprietary and not want to give it to the competition at NBC! Then again, if NBC is willing to pay a few bucks, they might change their tune--WMUR is a small affiliate, I'm betting every cent counts!

You must be quiet when I say so.
Just follow the signs and obey.

Sets of variously colored flip cards and an instruction sheet had been left on seats in the section of the stadium where the Washington students were located. When the students heard the signal from the cheerleaders, they were each supposed to hold up the appropriate flip card (as designated by the instruction sheet) over their head. In this way different gigantic images would be formed that would be visible to the rest of the stadium, as well as to those viewing at home. The Washington band planned on displaying a series of fifteen flip-card images in total.
The flip-card show got off to a well-coordinated start. Everything went smoothly, and the crowd marvelled at the colorful images forming, as if by magic, at the command of the cheerleaders. It wasnt until the 12th image that things began to go a little wrong. This image was supposed to depict a husky, Washingtons mascot. But instead a creature appeared that had buck teeth and round ears. It looked almost like a beaver.
The next image was even worse. The word HUSKIES was supposed to unfurl from left to right. But for some reason the word was reversed, so that it now read SEIKSUH.
These strange glitches rattled the Washington cheerleaders. They wondered if they might have made some careless mistakes when designing the complex stunt. But there was nothing for them to do about it now except continue on, and so they gave the signal for the next image.
What happened next has lived on in popular memory long after the rest of the 1961 Rose Bowl has been forgotten. It was one of those classic moments when a prank comes together instantly, perfectly, and dramatically.
The word CALTECH appeared, held aloft by hundreds of Washington students. The name towered above the field in bold, black letters and was broadcast to millions of viewers nationwide.
