"Harvest of Shame," about the living conditions of migrant workers, ran on CBS. There was a series called CBS Reports and another called NBC White Paper, both of which were a lot like Frontline is today.

How far the Big Three have fallen. All the original 60 Minutes team, all of them reporters who remembered those days, are dead now. Mike Wallace was the last of them, following Ed Bradley, Eric Sevareid, and Harry Reasoner, not to mention Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow. All of them got their start during or shortly after World War II.

I have completely stopped watching what passes for "news" on mainstream TV. It's all celebrity gossip, sensationalism, and cute "human interest" stories. Local news is the worst: ten minutes of fluff, ten minutes or weather, ten minutes of sports. I watch only when there's a possibility of a tornado or a blizzard heading toward Minneapolis.
