Who else feels like this nightmare was inevitable?

That one day "President" Trump would break America and destroy our quality of life like every business he's ever started.

From the moment Trump got elected I feared he would inadvertently start World War 3 because of his ego, inexperience and stupidity. I had no idea we'd end up going to war with a viral pandemic. But I feel like it was inevitable that Trump would encounter a global crisis that he would make a hundred times worse because of his incompetence.

Many Americans survived the last 3 years of the Trump presidency thinking "what's the worst that can happen?" or "nothing he does is effecting me personally."
I mean seriously, a month ago many Americans were ready to give this unstable sociopath another 4 years because the economy was doing well and a fear of America becoming a socialist country.

I'd never tell Trump voters, 3rd party voters or people who didn't vote in 2016 "I told you so." But we Democrats did try to warn people just how dangerous Trump would be. Where we are now brings back all the PTSD of that awful 2016 election night. Another devastating reminder that if Hillary was President we wouldn't be in this mess.

I just didn't know what it would be. The election of Trump was a black swan event and there was bound to be another one. And it doesn't bother me a bit to tell the racists, morons and damned fools who voted for him only because they didn't like Hillary, "I told you so. And fuck you."

For conservatives who held their noses and voted for Trump, libertarian/green party voters and the millions of people who stayed home in 2016. They might not admit it but their definitely going through the 5 stages of grief right now. Suddenly realizing Trump wasn't the lesser of 2 evils and Obama was a great President.

A lot of liberal hating Trumpsters I've met now swing back and forth from being depressed to angry. They're no longer in denial about how serious Coronavirus is. But they haven't fully accepted that Trump has handled this outbreak like a moron from the moment he heard about it.

it way better. For one thing the pandemic response team would have still been in place. She would have known she had to listen to them. Even if she was really reluctant to sound the alarm and spook the markets, she would have.

but as you say, with Hillary as president, the warnings would have been heeded early on. Testing would have been ramped up right away. The impact would definitely have been lessened, even though in a large country like the U.S. the level of testing done in some of the Asian countries would not have been feasible. The markets wouldn't have reacted as badly knowing that the situation was being handled properly. With red don, the markets know incompetence reigns and that bad outcomes are more likely.

We live in very odd times.........

(I silently wished for a general strike and the country would come to a grinding halt to bring about accelerated and much needed societal change - like a more sustainable life style).

Fasten your seat-belts and a fix your crash helmet - for slightly differing reasons that grinding halt might becoming to pass very soon.

Interesting times indeed.

Today's climate deniers will finally be forced to admit their error and start finding ways to belatedly reverse the looming disaster, much like former covid-19 deniers have in recent days. I imagine people will ask a similar question then, and the answer will be the same: "It was avoidable."

And even with a Democratic President we would still be in the deep shit.

That said, with a Democratic President we would be in such better shape. Yeah, we would have had testing earlier and started taking measures that would have kept the curve down. But we were never going to keep this out.

What would not have is a Nation where 40% of the population did not believe it is all over hyped and a hoax. That’s out there now and they will believe it even when they take their last choking breath waiting for a ventilator. Because their president spent a month telling them so.

And we would not have entered this with a trillion dollar deficit. It would have been at a reasonable level allowing us to throw resources at it without heading to a 2 trillion dollar deficit we are about to have.

Those 2 things are the most damaging.

And the irony now is so rich it makes me want to cry. The republicans are rushing to do the exact thing president Obama did which kicked off the tea party racist shit. Use the federal government to stave off a depression. Won’t hear them saying that shit now.

My original point was every President encounters situations and crisis that they didn't cause but have to deal with effectively. Like natural disasters. My opinion is Trump made this crisis a hundred times worse by shutting down the Pandemic Response Team in 2018. And by downplaying the seriousness of it for 2 months. And by lying repeatedly about the facts and turning to people like Mike Pence and Jared Kushner to solve this problem.

We could have stopped that but didn't. We have to be better citizens and vote smart and responsibly. As a duty, because it matters.

As for the epidemic, chances one would cut loose in our country were seriously increased by Republican negligence and the wired-in unfitness of hard-core conservatives for office, but I don't think it was inevitable that it would happen during their period of control. So, actually, no.

I’m surprised it took this long. I would have never imagined that I’d be quoting David Brooks, but “This is what happens when you elect a sociopath as president”. This is all on the Republicans. They knew what a chaotic, unqualified and irresponsible narcissist he was when they nominated him. Their win at any cost strategy will be catastrophic to this country and the world for generations, and that was before the current disaster.

greased the skids, this crisis probably would have happened anyway. There will not be a place on the globe exempt from C-19, and they don't all have Trump as the head of their government.

There are things Trump and his cronies have done deliberately to screw over the American people, but bringing this virus to our shores was not one of them. Yes, more people will certainly die because of his actions (and inactions) but like climate change, this thing was coming for us one way or another.
