Cruise lines, early source of coronavirus infections, out of bailout package

Like hotels and airlines, cruise companies have seen their business decimated by the coronavirus pandemic and economic shutdowns.

But unlike those industries, major cruise operators don’t locate their headquarters in the United States, so they will not have access to $500 billion in aid for large employers in the massive stimulus bill, the industry’s trade group said on Thursday.

Language in the 883-page bill passed by the Senate says that to be eligible for aid from the $500 billion fund companies must be certified as “created or organized in the United States or under the laws of the United States" as well as having “significant operations in” and a majority of employees based in the United States.

Not locating in the United States may have sunk the industry’s chances, despite its close ties to Trump, who has known Arison for years and who pledged earlier to help the industry with the stimulus package. “We can’t let the cruise lines go out of business,” Trump said Sunday.

to become ABC Cruises overnight.

You pay them for a boat or two, hire the crew that's already on the boat and paint it. I don't think these companies have a large number of permanent employees.

...and of course paying attention to the news about them.

They didn't ask to be included in the bail out.

Thinking about it, makes sense. They aren't incurring any major operational costs while their fleets sit idle in port. All the employee's of the ship with the exception the most vital....are canned. Expenses of food and fuel....gone.

Then, here domestically where they have corporate offices, agent reservation call centers, etc. Most will or already have been laid off. Just a few around to keep the lights on.

And of course, they are sitting on multi-million dollar floating assets, know doubt some of the newer ones are being financed, but they are registered in nations friendly toward them and the banks will be forced deal with that if they want their money.

And yes, that industry is going to take time to revive, but they don't have to put out every ship either. Fill them as needed, hire booking agents as needed, until they are at full speed.
