Team Trump is rushing to rewrite the early narrative about the presidents response to coronavirus.
Faced with endless video clips of Donald Trump downplaying the escalating outbreak, Trump aides and allies are working furiously to instead highlight the presidents recent actions and comments.
Their effort comprises three tactics: Blanket supporters with detailed timelines of every action the Trump administration took. Amplify praise of those actions. And forcefully push back against anyone who criticizes those actions.
Just over seven months from the November election, Trumps aides and allies realize the presidents campaign for a second term has been completely transformed in a matter of weeks. It will now come down to his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his response to a devastated economy, according to seven people familiar with the situation, including four who speak directly with the president.
The president and his performance is the campaign. Its the only thing that matters, said Scott Jennings, who worked for President George W. Bush and is close to the Trump White House. There is nothing to do if you are the sitting president of the United States but to get it right. If you get it right, what better argument for reelection than this unprecedented crisis?
The Trump campaign had wanted to focus on a long list of other issues as the president launched a general election race against Democrat Joe Biden: the presidents impeachment acquittal, Bidens acuity and overseas actions by Bidens son Hunter.
Instead, it has shifted almost entirely to rehabilitating Trumps handling of the coronavirus crisis.

Indeed.

(10,192 posts)Trump campaigned on draining the swamp while promising he alone could fix it.
That he had to paint Hillary, a non-incumbent, as part of the Washington "swamp." Now he embodies it. His base won't care about anything but seeing him reelected, but he's going to need more than that to win, and I don't think his pose of running as "the outsider" who can "fix" everything as you put it is going to resonate too well with independents and undecideds this time around.

(1,132 posts)labeled "Slow the Spread" and "President Trump's Coronavirus Guidelines for America", Ostensibly from The White House, CDC, and Coronavirus.gov. Surprisingly, the advice on the back seemed to actually come from intelligent, reasonable sources making sensible suggestions; not chloroquine and "Open for business by Easter as we have come to expect from SFB Trump. This leads me to conclude that the prominent paean to Trump provided the requisite butt kissing to allow the document to be sent out at all.
