San Diego, CA Mayor: Nearly all the ballots are counted from San Diego's March 3 nonpartisan mayoral primary, and it appears all but certain that Republicans have lost a post they've held almost nonstop for 28 years.

Democratic Assemblyman Todd Gloria is in first place with 42%, while Democrat Barbara Bry leads Republican Scott Sherman, her colleague on the City Council, 22.9-22.6—a margin of 1,001 votes—for the second place spot in the November general election. Whoever wins this fall will succeed Republican incumbent Kevin Faulconer, who was unable to run again due to term limits, as head of the nation's eighth-largest city.

That said, I think there are one or two very red areas left in CA that had two Republicans running for the House seat

4. Great News Let's Hope This Is A Trend

Been reading a couple of books that show how we got to now. One is Jane Mayer’s “Dark Money”.

She details how they got down in the weeds to win local and State elections so they could draw the Congressional district borders to their advantage. All backed my enormous funding by the likes of the Koch’s.

We have to put time, money, and effort to win locally, right down to School Boards and County Commisioners.

6. A little overblown

Honestly this article is a little sensationalized.

Democrat (and former congressman) Bob Filner won the mayor's race back in 2012, but he was forced to resign after multiple sexual harassment issues came to light. Milquetoast Republican Kevin Faulconer won the special election to replace him, mostly because younger voters really hate coming out for special elections.

His predecessor was Jerry Sanders, a republican who technically lost the special election in 2005. He was defeated by Donna Frye, a Democrat, who staged a successful write-in candidacy for mayor. When he lost, Republicans went to court and got some of the write-in ballots thrown out, so that he ended up ahead. Fair and square, we would have won that election too.

And we were having a special election at the time because the previous mayor, Republican Dick Murphy, had resigned due to a pension scandal.

Democrats were very angry at Filner because we had finally won the mayor's post after a generation but he screwed it up for another 8 years. At least Faulconer has been so ineffective as mayor that nothing really went off the rails. I swear the easiest way to kill an initiative is to have Faulconer get behind it.

A year or two ago we passed a ballot initiative that forces offices like the mayor to be voted on in General elections (instead of using special elections to replace them). Honestly I think that was probably the death-nell for any more Republican mayors, I don't think they can win contests when a larger % of the city population comes out to vote.

8. SD has had a lot of corrupt mayors. i recall that one who became a talk radio host after going to

jail or almost to jail.
