As coronavirus cases ramp up across the nation, Fort Lauderdale has become the latest city to order residents to stay home and you could be punished if you dont.
The citys stay-at-home order, issued Friday, takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday. Violators could be arrested and jailed for 60 days or fined $500.
Now every single city in Broward is following suit and ordering residents to stay home.
Fort Lauderdales emergency order came Friday afternoon, one day after Broward County issued a directive strongly urging residents to shelter in place, though the order included no penalty for violators.
That order did not require residents to stay home; it is merely requested that they do so, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said.
We are invoking the hand of the law to ensure compliance, Trantalis said of his citys directive, which ends April 17. We believe that strongly urging people is not sufficient to carry out these emergency orders.
