The state of Alabama closes all "non-essential" businesses

Effective March 28 through April 17. Explicitly stated by Gov. Kay Ivey as exempt are grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, state-owned liquor stores and gun stores.

Yep, you read that correctly. Liquor and guns are deemed essential in Alabama.

The argument was that closing gun stores is an Amendment 2 violation.

The governor caved in and added gun stores to the exempt businesses list before it went to trial. I guess he didn’t want to spend the money arguing that gun sales aren’t constitutionally protected.

I’m sure that’s encouraging other states to also allow gun stores to remain open.

And had a fairly decent argument that it was overreaching the governor's authority under PA law.

It was probably a good legal maneuver, he could have lost the ability to force any businesses to close. There are other lawsuits like it but without the state and federal constitutional angle, they will be easier to keep tried up in the courts.

The law firm behind it (Prince) is very close to me and well regarded

I mean, I’m not surprised. Every governor that claims they’re not going to shut everything down will have to eventually.

This is almost nothing compared to what needs to be done here.
