(16,200 posts)do you have any idear what he'd say if you referred to him as "ELDERLY"?????? JESIS ON A PADDLEBOARD, HE'D HAUNT YOU FOREVER.
Whew, he's written far too much music to not know what happens at the last chord.
I hope to meet him on the other side.

(82,383 posts)Hahah he can haunt me too.
He was younger probably when he wrote a song sensitive to old people, "Hello in There."
Hello In There
John Prine
We had an apartment in the city
Me and Loretta liked living there
Well, it'd been years since the kids had grown
A life of their own left us alone
John and Linda live in Omaha
And Joe is somewhere on the road
We lost Davy in the Korean war
And I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore
Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello"
Me and Loretta, we don't talk much more
She sits and stares through the back door screen
And all the news just repeats itself
Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen
Someday I'll go and call up Rudy
We worked together at the factory
But what could I say if asks "What's new?"
"Nothing, what's with you? Nothing much to do"
So if you're walking down the street sometime
And spot some hollow ancient eyes
Please don't just pass 'em by and stare
As if you didn't care, say, "Hello in there, hello"

(13,390 posts)He has written tons of songs celebrating older people. A couple of yrs ago, when I saw him in concert he talked about how he had hoped to grow up to be an old person, as he introduced "Hello In There." He has celebrated elderly people in his music.

(12,173 posts)I dont even like his style of music (folk, singer-songwriter, country-ish), but I *love* John Prine. Hes really in a category by himself.

(25,988 posts)There's only so much 'keep calm and carry on' in each of us during all this, and that just busted the dam for me. John Prine is an amazing song writer and I am so sorry to hear he's ill. I know we're all pulling for him to get better soon.
Sitting on the porch today playing my song lists, and going back into my favs. Very many are Johns songs and went through a dozen of his greatest. Just felt great reminiscing. Had no idea he was sick. My heart is breaking. Bless you John, for so many years, so many stories. 🙏🏽

She said, hold on, let's turn off this main highway.
OH MY GOD! The land behind the potemkin green frontsides, was gone. A moonscape. Like looking at Mars. One huge open scar as far as the eye could see.
Heartbreaking. Thanks Peabody Coal Company.
John Prine knew what he was singing about.

He is a huge part of the soundtrack of my life.
I am sad about Joe Diffie dying though I was not much of a fan. I can sing many John Prine songs and do so when I need him.

(4,462 posts)My husband and our best friend were big fans, while I was only somewhat familiar with his music. The big draw for me was that the Cowboy Junkies were his opening act. OMG, what a great concert in a relatively small setting!

(25 posts)I still remember this concert from the mid 90's. Both Prine and the Cowboy Junkies brought tears to my eyes. Never forget it!

(24,737 posts)that he knows that there are many, many people thinking of him tonight and we are all in the same situation-------------we are choked up...................his songs were basically about having empathy for the other person.................

(4,572 posts)You can gaze out the window get mad and get madder,
Throw your hands in the air, say "what does it matter? "
But it don't do no good to get angry,
So help me I know
For a heart stained in anger grows weak and grows bitter.
You become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there
Wrapped up in a trap of your very own
Chain of sorrow.
