I've been in company overhead for a bit now. I've been liquidating some assets in order to have some cash on hand, but of course, that means locking in losses. C'est la vie. The company is not laying me off, just a furlough. They will still pay my health and life insurance, and will even over my part of the premium, so that's great but no income. I'm not sure how unemployment works for furloughed folks. I've been fortunate to never be unwillingly unemployed in my life. I'm not eligible for the for the "relief" checks because of my usual income. I think I have enough cash on hand to make it for 2 months, if I really tighten the screws. I'm going to call my bank about the mortgage (just paid April yesterday, before the furlough today) and the car loan. After I burn through the emergency fund, the next stop is credit cards. Ugh. Hoping to avoid cracking the 401K and locking in big losses. My daughter's college fund is okay, since I moved the fund out of stocks last year.
Weird feeling. My wife still has her job. She's a professor on a 10-month pay schedule, so she gets paychecks through May. She doesn't make enough to cover the bills, but with the cash reserves, we're fine until June. I do have credit cards that should pull us through the summer if absolutely necessary. Her pay begins at the end of August again, and HOPEFULLY I am back to work by then. We'll see.
This is gonna hurt a bit.

(14,742 posts)You don't have to be laid off, just not being paid as a result of the crisis.
So check your state and see if they have similar rules. Hopefully you don't live in FL.
Good luck.

(25,853 posts)entitled to unemployment benefits, but that would be a state by state thing. You'll have to check with your state to find out.

(10,188 posts)I had one job where I got furloughed and I could have gotten it if things had gone on. I think there was a 2 week waiting period before you could actually start collecting. That was awhile ago but a couple other things you said are things I dealt with more recently. Missed a lot of work due to illness. First used up whatever accrued leave I had then started living in my credit cards and finally raided my 401k. I think well be seeing a lot of that in the coming months.

(15,805 posts)your employer has locked you out of your job. You didn't decide not to go to work, but your employer did. Think about it.
How does that prevent you from filing for unemployment, especially under the generous new provisions that have been added since the corona virus? Your employer has covered your unemployment money through the taxes they have already paid.
File a claim to see if you are eligible, everyday you delay is money you're losing. Go online. Do it today.

I signed up in NY a couple weeks ago - it was not fun as they certainly weren't prepared for the influx - but stick it out if you have issues.
I'm in same situation as you; furloughed, no federal stimulus check, BUT...with the supposed $600 extra federal UI assistance, you should do OK until - hopefully - you get rehired.

(7,296 posts)The only "hiccup" could be that my employer is still paying my insurance premiums, but they seem pretty sure that's okay, so long as I am not going to get a paystub (I won't.... my employer said the funds would be reported as a "bonus" after work starts up again).

(61,695 posts)that it was good that you were able to plan ahead so you wouldn't be looking at homelessness or other problems. Good luck!
