A man not wearing a face mask was removed from a Philadelphia bus by police officers on April 10 for reportedly refusing to leave when the driver asked.
Video captured by Dupree Myers, a Philadelphia resident, shows four police officers forcefully removing the man from the bus, backed up by at least 5 other officers.
The Philadelphia Police Department responded to the incident saying that the officers were called to assist the bus driver, who said the man had refused to leave the bus when asked.
The police officers who arrived at the scene then asked the man to leave and after he refused again, he was removed by force, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. It added that the incident is still under investigation.

(3,473 posts)A scarf should do. You can even take a t-shit and tie it around your face. The point with non-N95 masks is to prevent the user from spreading the virus. So anything that covers your face and prevents droplets spreading from coughing and sneezing should do.

(3,013 posts)Watching the vids explained a lot though. Cops almost always over-react when it comes to interacting with african-americans. Certainly explains why he was drug out, forced against the bus, and damn near dog-piled.
Given the whole 'health concerns' that the cops were running on, it's hilarious to seeing the cops that either didn't have a mask, or were wearing it incorrectly. Public health my ass, these cops were looking for a easy outlet for their aggression.

(3,013 posts)Wearing a mask wasn't mandatory, the policy was voluntary.
The call he put in was, apparently, so strongly worded as to require NINE cops to respond.
The fact that the driver was so quick to welcome white cops onto the bus, despite either lacking a mask or incorrectly wearing them, really puts the 'but virus threat!' angle in extreme doubt.
Justify it all you want, but to me this looks a lot like the plethora of 'scary black man!' calls that 'well-meaning' people make. This time, using the current pandemic to justify their racism.

(10,807 posts)First the Bus driver asks you to leave, but you refuse, and then 9 cops show up. What do YOU do? Me? I would have left after seeing the first cop. You know, common sense.
Please point out where I was justifying racism.

(3,013 posts)Why do you need 9 cops to remove and detain one non-violent person? With the kind of response the police thought appropriate, you'd think he was waving a gun around threatening to murder someone.
You don't legitimately need 9 people to remove one non-violent person. It's just common sense.
Further, it's extremely odd that the driver was so accepting of people who were either not properly wearing their masks, or not wearing one at all, on the bus.
Seriously though - That SEPTA was so quick to rescind this policy shows who was in the right. Hint hint, it's not the bus driver who made such a drummed up call that got 9 cops to show up to remove one person.

(10,807 posts)No. I did not condone racism, swing and a miss. And where in the story does it mention other passengers 'who were either not properly wearing their masks, or not wearing one at all, on the bus.'
How far up did you have to reach to pull these "alternative facts" out?

(3,013 posts)Some of which who as the recorded video footage shows, were either not wearing a mask or incorrectly wearing one. Nothing alternative about that, unless you're claiming that the footage of him being drug out of the bus and thrown against the side of it is fake?
Can you explain just what makes 9 cops a appropriate, or at least a reasonable, response here? I'd love to hear your justification for why they were entirely correct to bring forward what at the surface is a extremely disproportionate response, especially with them not charging the man with anything and the SEPTA quickly backtracking on the policy that spurred this on.

(3,013 posts)Hint, it isn't the bus driver who played up the report so much that, apparently, 9 cops is considered a 'appropriate' response.
