Consensus: Mitt Romney Made A Fool Of Himself With Libya Response

Consensus: Mitt Romney Made A Fool Of Himself With Libya Response

by joelgp

Mark Halperin:

"Unless the Romney campaign has gamed this crisis out in some manner completely invisible to the Gang of 500, his doubling down on criticism of the President for the statement coming out of Cairo is likely to be seen as one of the most craven and ill-advised tactical moves in this entire campaign."

Politico:

"Over the top: Yesterday we noted that Mitt Romney, down in the polls after the convention, was throwing the kitchen sink at President Obama. Little did we know the kitchen sink would include -- on the anniversary of 9/11 -- one of the most over-the-top and (it turns out) incorrect attacks of the general election campaign."

Tweet From National Journal:

"A ham-handed and inaccurate response from Romney. There is a reason why politix stops at water's edge."

Salon:

"That it’s fundamentally dishonest hasn’t stopped Mitt Romney from repeating his central critique of Barack Obama’s foreign policy over and over – the idea that the president “went around the world and apologized for America.” So it shouldn’t be surprising that Romney’s response to the attacks on U.S. diplomatic installations in Egypt and Libya was rooted in the same caricature of Obama as apologizer-in-chief.

“It’s disgraceful,” Romney’s statement, which was released late Tuesday night, read, “that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”

Buzzfeed:

"Foreign Policy Hands Voice Disbelief At Romney Cairo Statement"

"Mitt Romney's sharply-worded attack on President Obama over a pair of
deadly riots in Muslim countries last night has backfired badly among
foreign policy hands of both parties, who cast it as hasty and off-key,
released before the facts were clear at what has become a moment of
tragedy."

My take: Romney made an absolute fool of himself.

His Libya response made him look like a degenerate /:

How can you tell a bunch of people surrounded by an enraged mob... that they should spit on that mob with an air of aristocratic contempt? Did that work out too well for Marie Antoinette? Next time there's a riot outside of a US building in the ME, someone should volunteer Mr. Rmoney to go over there, stand before the incensed throng, and tell them, to their faces, that condescending smirk on his face, "I will not apologize for American values of hate and bigotry against your culture."
