The nuts are coming out and their gloves are off . . .

Fox News and others are giving explicit or tacit support to the protests in Michigan and elsewhere.

More and more people are demanding lift the quarantine and the President is cheer-leading.

Betsy DeVos supported the rally in Lansing, MI (probably because the governor is considered a possible running me for Biden).

Fox parades "experts," officials, contributors, and guests who support (some vehemently) the opening of commerce despite the virus

We can hear the roar of the falls getting closer as we drift down the river.

What chaos are we headed toward? What bleakness?

1. I say we label them as "spreaders" or "infectors" and we treat them as the health risk they are.

If someone coughs on me on purpose, they are going to hospital and I'm going to jail.

Ignorance isn't cute.

8. my once-rational mother told me about the protests

she's got herself shut away in total quarantine even though she lives in a state that doesn't yet have many confirmed cases (undertesting) and was very late in getting a state-wide stay-at-home order. But she's been (fortunately) taking it seriously from the get go. I'm very relieved about that.

And yet, she gets her news (and has for a few years now) from Fox News, and yesterday when I checked on her she was telling me about the protests and how she didn't agree with them in general but gosh there sure were some silly and over the top rules in Michigan's decree. And before I had a chance to explain why those particular rules actually make sense we shifted topics to a different political hot spot (some misinformation about the release of some prisoners in California) and then (mercifully) away from politics altogether. But it was very clear to me that--even though it runs entirely counter to everything she believes about the pandemic and the response and how she's responding on a personal level--fox news was making some inroads with the complaints about the particulars of the Michigan lockdown. I can't figure it out.

My brother, who lives with her, told me the last time I talked to him that he thought Trump was doing a great job and so on. Meanwhile, though, my brother is also upset that anybody has to go to work, thinks that his state should have done more to shut things down, and has supported and helped my mom with her self-isolation from the get go. I guess one has to somehow overcome a tremendous cognitive dissonance to, on the one hand, parrot the shifting fox news/trump party line, which has consistently been skeptical of or outright hostile to responsible social distancing and, on the other, practice it aggressively the way they have. I'm relieved that they can at least live with that cognitive dissonance well enough to keep up the responsible behavior. But I sure wish they'd come all the way through to the light.

being loud and rude will help. But it's not going to work this time.

It is starting to sink in to them that THEY are facing the same fate as many others they didn't care about have faced for years. Bankruptcy and homelessness. Hunger. No affordable health care. They are starting to realize that THEY might have to blow through THEIR 401ks to have any chance to economically survive this pandemic and wondering if the 401k will even stretch long enough? Bye bye retirement?

Remember these are the same people who saw other people becoming homeless to medical bankruptcy for years and yet cast their votes for "conservatives" like Ryan and McConnell and Rand Paul. They "didn't want to pay for someone else's healthcare". Of course, they already had "theirs", their employee health care plans. Suddenly Medicare for All has a nicer ring to it.

Weren't these the same people that thought it was a good idea to make food stamp recipients have to have jobs and submit to drug testing? Will there be enough cups for them to pee in? They already don't have TP. And the food lines are long.

They just want to go back to the comfortable bubbles they were living in before, like nothing ever happened, except, of course, the old people they don't give a shit about dying off as they infect them in the process. But that's not going to happen. Their evil leader doesn't have that kind of power over their governors. It's dawning on magats that now they too, are fucked, like the rest of us, living under the leadership of the criminals they forced down our throats.

They can't yell loud enough or be rude enough or obnoxious enough to make it go away. They are going to get madder and madder though, because this is just getting started.

They're looking for whatever spark is going to ignite this powder keg. And people are already getting restless and stir crazy enough as it is, we don't need them fucking things up and making it worse.
