California man confirms role in anti-Islam film

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The search for those behind the provocative, anti-Muslim film implicated in violent protests in Egypt and Libya led Wednesday to a California Coptic Christian convicted of financial crimes who acknowledged his role in managing and providing logistics for the production.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told The Associated Press in an interview outside Los Angeles that he helped with logistics for the filming of "Innocence of Muslims," which mocked Muslims and the prophet Muhammad and may have caused inflamed mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. He provided the first details about a shadowy production group behind the film.

Nakoula denied he directed the film and said he knew the self-described filmmaker, Sam Bacile. But the cell phone number that AP contacted Tuesday to reach the filmmaker who identified himself as Sam Bacile traced to the same address near Los Angeles where AP found Nakoula. Federal court papers said Nakoula's aliases included Nicola Bacily, Erwin Salameh and others.

Nakoula told the AP that he was a Coptic Christian and said the film's director supported the concerns of Christian Copts about their treatment by Muslims.

a criminal who should be killed for being gay are offended by a freaking movie? I think all religion is idiotic bullshit that makes people crazy (or maybe it's just that mentally deficient people gravitate to religion) but most of them aren't as bizarre and nuts as these radical fundie muslims. I haven't seen the movie but from what little has been reported, I'm inclined to agree with it.

The timing of this is no accident (IMHO). It would not surprise me to find out there are political origins to this film and the timing, coupled with unwitting wing nut / religious stooges used to be the front people in getting it done. It's all very fishy and plays into Mitts agenda to hit hard on foreign policy ....could this be a Rovian " September surprise".... eerie parallels...

...the film was made some time ago, and had an unsuccessful screening last spring. What I'm more curious about is why trailers for a flopped film should appear on YouTube months after the film itself was written-off by its makers. Did someone find info about it online, and decide it could be used to stir up an international incident at an opportune time?

13. That makes sense - It takes so little to stir up an incident these days....
