!) Seventy years after the fact historians are still debating whether FDR knew an attack on Pearl Harbor was imminent.
2) Fifty years after the fact historians are still debating whether Viet Nam attacked our vessels in the Gulf Of Tonkin.
3) Over one hundred years after the fact historians are still discussing what happened to the USS Maine,
4) A decade and a Congressional hearing after the fact we still don't know if Bush* knew an attack by Al Qaeda was imminent.
And usually these debates, even among historians, break down among ideological lines.
The answer to what happened to our embassy in Libya is not going to be answered in the fog of this campaign season except by some nutters and dead enders. Romney already has them. The problem is getting from 40% of the electorate to 50% is really hard....

(9,612 posts)We know what happened to the Maine. The explosion that sank her came from the inside. Rickover's investigation proved that.
We know what happened at the Gulf of Tonkin. We provoked the attack.
And the recent release of 80 documents warning of the 9/11 attacks proved that Bush knew.
We may debate for ages what happened in Libya, but sooner or later truth will out.

And maybe you will find a consensus among historians about Gulf Of Tonkin but there is far from universal support for LIHOP among historians.
That's just the way it is.
The overarching point stands. The answer to what happened to our embassy in Libya is not going to be answered in the fog of this campaign season except by some nutters and dead enders.

(99,710 posts)My overarching point is that "truth" is often seen through a prism be that prism cultural, ideological,or religious, et cetera and it's certainly not going to be determined with an election revealed with seven weeks to go.
I think the fact that fifteen percent of Ohio Republicans think Mitt Romney is responsible for the death of Osama bin Laden kind of proves my point.
