When I posted about the Insurrection Act yesterday, I'd hoped I was wrong about the direction

Trump would move.

What Tom Cotton and Kayleigh McEnany said today made it look more likely Trump would do this.

Damn him.

Tom Nichols tweets -- note, this is how a conservative views Trump's incendiary speech and actions:

Watching a President of the United States trying to spark a civil war. Praying that millions of people are too committed to justice and peace to take this obvious bait.

What did I just say, moments before he took the podium? He is trying to make this situation explode. The protesters should not take the bait.

Firing teargas into them is the bait. Trump was hoping that this whole thing would explode in violence while he was on stage, so that he could look tough. He wants the protesters to act in a way that will justify the rhetoric he’s trying to apply to this situation.

He wants a rationale for deploying the military so bad that you can expect there will be further provocations from the authorities. If there was ever a time for self discipline on the part of the protesters, it’s the next 24 hours.

I agree. There was a Tom Nichols tweet about that, too, before those I posted in the OP: highplainsdem Jun 2020 #2

He mentioned the 2nd amendment rights. The subtext sounds like he's calling on his magats to bring their guns and fight protesters.

Trump just invoked the Second Amendment. As if that was part of this. Pretty much a signal for jumpy white people to walk around with guns.
