Fast-food chain Wendys is the target of social media backlash after it was discovered that the chain has donated over $440,000 to Donald Trumps reelection campaign. The hashtag #WendysIsOverParty began to trend in support of boycotting the popular restaurant.

(11,026 posts)Not saying Wendy's owner is a saint, but they're getting dragged because of a franchise owner.

(16,927 posts)As I now understand it, the "corporation" is not the same as the founder (the "corporation" is not "the bad guy" - the founder is, and no longer involved with the "corporation"
).
So, I'm gonna' wait to see what's up with this, then I'll support those that share the same visions that I do.
Thanks for the input!

(34,074 posts)Dave Thomas is the founder.
Wendys is a publically traded corporation - owned by the shareholders. I don't have any direct knowledge of their donations, or of the donations made by the top officers in the corporation, but you can look up donations to national campaigns.
The publiclly traded corporation allows individuals or smaller corporations to operate the restaurants (generally in a defined geographic area), under the name, trade dress, etc. of Wendy's umbrella.
It was someone in the final category (someone with a license to operate local restaurants) who made significant donations to Trump.
That person has no control over Wendy's outside of the restaurants they operate under license - looks like generally in Texas.

(15,330 posts)Not holding Wendy's accountable is like not holding the mobs accountant liable for money laundering.
I'm fucking sick and tired of corporations advertising on hate platforms, but saying; "well, my ads don't run on Limbaugh or Hannitty's show.
Fuck Wendy's. They approved this fuckers franchise. They gave their name for him to use. They made him his money that he donated to fascists.
If Wendy's gave a shit, they'd cancel his franchise.
Until then, I hope they go out of fucking business.
There must be consequences for associating with this shitshow.

Not boycotting EVERY GOD DAMN Wendy's would be like buying a Volkswagen during WWII

(29,149 posts)feel free to boycott 'em all, I don't care. But it's not horseshit to point out the difference between a franchisee and the corporation itself.

Lol. Well, not exactly, but by all means, you do you. I'm certainly not going to try to convince anyone they should be going to wendy's.

(6,806 posts)I mean if it's 5 wendy's locations in New Orleans I don't go there, but the people in New Orleans should have the option to know that the owner of those 5 locations is screwing with us. If I found out it is the owner of the location two miles from me, I should have the option to not fund him.

(3,131 posts)Id love to get my fingers in some Wendys chili.
I cant put my finger on it but their chili is nothing to thumb your nose at.
Ill also point out they were one of the first fast food places to embrace the computer revolution and switch from analog to digital chili.
Actually I like their chili too

(260 posts)I prefer to take it easy on the boycotts. If you boycott every franchise that donates money to a Republican, pretty soon you won't be able to shop anywhere. Plus, these things mostly hurt the employees, who often make poverty wages already, while the employers will be perfectly fine.
Another problem is it could affect the wrong people. When Rush Limbaugh attracted controversy for libeling Sandra Fluke, he lost many radio advertisers. Those same advertisers also ended up not buying time on liberal radio shows too, costing them money as well. Stephanie Miller was a prime example.
Currently, the only business I boycott is Chik-Fil-A. I will not give them money under any circumstances, so they won't donate it to anti-LGTBQ groups. I'll get my chicken sandwiches from Popeyes instead.

(2,949 posts)Now a couple other places i personally boycott... Papa Johns pizza and Chick-fil-a . In reality we could probably boycott all large franchises including places like Home Depot, Menards and so on. Wealthy folks donate to republicans.

(89,250 posts)hurt Papa Johns was because the food isn't that good so it was easy to boycott them.

(8,835 posts)can't organizations refuse to disclose who donated to them and/or how much??????
The reality of the boycotts on corporations, is that most of the CEO's and owners, are die hard RepubliCONS.
But most of them have the sense to keep their mouth's shut.
If we started boycotting corporations or franchise owners for being RepubliCONs, we would soon not be able to buy anything.....
