(16,808 posts)Too fucking late, Drew. You revealed your inner RACIST JERK. I hope you choke on your antiquated attitudes that when you walk out onto the field, the people boo you and your teammates turn their backs, for over 60% of the NFL Players are African-American.

(7,863 posts)when the bigots out themselves... self-righteous "heroes" assume they speak for all of us and when the condemnation rains down on them they back-track, they sputter.."didn't mean it the way it sounded"..."I could have said it better"...blah blah blah...Brees may not have been drunk but this saying still applies "drunk talk is sober thought"...

And they started the story out by describing Kaepernick's quiet peaceful protest against police brutality and how the substance of what he was doing was pretty much ignored and the whole thing turned into his "lack of patriotism" and "disrespect of the flag." And how Brees was a part of that.
And yeah, Brees's earlier statements did show his ignorance and apathy of what it's like to be an African American in America.
If he truly is rethinking things now, I think that's a good thing. I also think it's a good thing when someone can come forward and say that they're looking at things from a different perspective. Would that only 45 could follow that example.
It's beyond shameful that it took the death of a man to get people to re-think the whole "taking a knee" scenario.
(Of course there have been many, many deaths that should have gotten people's attention--which was what Kaepernick was trying to say all along.)

(82,849 posts)But the fact that his fatuous statement created enough pushback that Brees feels he has to "clarify" it or walk it back is progress of a sort.

Any word from his owners or teammates?

(2,299 posts)In the late 1970s, the cardiac kids described the Cleveland Browns who were trying to unseat the powerful Steel Curtain from Pittsburgh. Many last minute comebacks and they got a great nickname and Sipe looked to be the next great quarterback.... and then he forgot an important lesson. A QB needs his line to protect him.
Sipe apparently slept with the wife of one of the lineman and the line allowed Sipe to get absolutely blown up taking sacks and his career was never the same. Just imagine if you angered all the African American guys in the league. Not just your own offensive line.
Hey, Drew, the defensive lineman are bigger, stronger, and faster than back then. You are smaller than Sipe and much older than Sipe was. What do you think might happen if the left and right tackle start to think about the "F Drew Brees" chant from last night when Suh, Aaron Donald, or a littany of other 300 plus pound dudes come looking for some justice.
Sipe was never the same. You may never walk the same again.

(20,819 posts)I was a teenager in suburban Cleveland and the Browns were practically a religion. I didn't give a shit, but I went to a small private school with Sam Rutigliano's (head coach) daughters and my mom worshipped at the Church of Football, denomination of Cleveland Browns.

(19,140 posts)I wonder if he forgot about that, but he himself knelt for the National Anthem.
Brees has been a good teammate and leader for a long time, his apology seemed appropriate and heart felt. He probably still has some fence mending to do with his teammates, but this issue should go away.
Drew Brees has been an ally, not the enemy, there are many more important things and people to focus on IMO. He screwed up, he said he's sorry.
