Back in the day when we were protesting the Viet Nam war, police then also used tear

gas and rubber bullets. The tear gas canisters of that time were larger and clunkier, but were used in much the same way as they are today. The rubber bullets, however, were used differently.

In the sixties, (yes, i am THAT old!) The cops aimed their "street-sweeper" shotguns down at the street yards in front of the crowd. When the rubber bullet slug struck the pavement, the impact caused it to spin through the crowd at an altitude of two feet or so. Used in this manner, one round could knock several long-haired tie-died sandal-wearing ganja-smoking hippies off their feet. Occasionally, some unlucky soul would get conked by a falling tear gas canister, but I don't recall hearing of anyone being struck in the face by a rubber bullet.

And, we called those cops "pigs".

..Didn't get it directly, but I remember it. It was across from a hotel where people came for the 68 Democratic Convention..(that is the Hilton Hotel in downtown Chicago) I walked across the street to a park where the protesters were and the cops lined the street..(Michigan Ave)..I was just walking around, it was very peaceful & in the middle of the day about 1pm. One of the police officers let loose with a tear gas bomb and it floated through the park where I was walking. Yes, hard to forget that one. Earlier I attended a press conference which was open to the public, and was listening to George McGovern talk. (he had taken over after Robert Kennedy was killed) ...anyway on his way out, I shook McGovern hand and wished him the best...Hard to believe that was more than 50 years ago...(68 to 2018)??? 50 years ...Oh My...????

In Chicago at that time!

I was a mid-teen on vacation with parents. We'd eat out and then come home to watch The Convention!
"...the while world is watching..."

Luckily any protest I went to I'd get out before the police got nasty to dangerous!! ie Vietnam, Iraq, The Republican Convention. All others protests and mmarches were peaceful as far as I know.

:yikes: I've see the recent photos if the rbs effects! Yikes Not a real bullet but day-am! And that poor reporter!

sorry if I inferred that she was part of it.
Her and her friends were mostly clueless.
They were there at a historical event that I
was too young to comprehend.
Jealous and wishful on my part.
I didn't get "woke" til '70.
Her boyfriend was black she was a Jewish girl from Skokie
Not a safe thing at that time.

of NCSU winning the NCAA basketball tourney in Raleigh in the very early 70's ?
there was a street celebration on Hillsboro near the campus belltower, around the original Darryl's restaurant, Player's Retreat and the ZigZag head shop ..
I headed there with some friends and watched the crowd swell, lunacy occur and mayhem abound .. the police kept backing up block by block as the crowd grew..
this was also a time when streaking was popular, so 1/2 dozen or so naked freaks would race through the crowded streets in abandon chased by several pigs as the crowd laughed and cheered them on .. it was a street party growing past midnite, and the pigs decided to shut it down with teargas ..
i remember seeing the initial white clouds, the crowd rush in escape, running with my gf and laughing and crying at the same time til we had some distance from the melee and observing from a distance as the crowd dispersed ..
there was no violence that i observed, just 1k+ college students and townies drinking, partying, streaking and dancing in celebration of a bball trophy ...
yeah, we were bad, bad freaks... having too much fun ...

as a side note, that's what we called ourselves at the time ... freaks.. as in
freaks of nature.. and we were proud of it, as i am to this day 🙃
