Booker says he would sooner die than allow Trump to refuse to concede the election if he's defeated

CNN article - this is their very long headline

Cory Booker says he's 'concerned' Trump won't accept election results in defeat but 'would sooner die' than let that happen

which not only wouldn't fit as the thread title, but was a bit confusing since I thought at first he meant Trump would sooner die than concede.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/10/politics/cory-booker-trump-2020-election/index.html

Sen. Cory Booker said Wednesday that he's "concerned" President Donald Trump might refuse to concede if he loses the 2020 presidential race and declared that he'd "sooner die" than let that happen.

"I would sooner die. And I mean that very seriously, I would sooner die than to see my nation's constitutional tradition of peaceful transfers of power to be vacated by a demagogue who won't humble himself," the New Jersey Democrat, a former 2020 presidential candidate, said during an interview on SiriusXM's "The Clay Cane Show."

His comments come as the President continues to push unfounded claims about voter fraud ahead of November's general election. Before his win in 2016, Trump had said he would accept the election results "if I win."

"This President has already shown his willingness to trample constitutional norms," Booker said Wednesday.

-snip-

Booker also said that Trump having peaceful protesters tear-gassed so he could have his church photo-op was "a bit of a stress test" that showed him "that should we have a greater stress test of him trying to delegitimize an election and remain in power, that there are people in other positions of power that will not let that happen. And I'm one of them."

Agree that prison guards would be no match for professional military.

But militias are well-armed with stockpiled weapons and gear. Their leaders and several members are former military. There are several of them in each state across the country. Even if they lost in the end, they could create a lot of havoc and disruption before then.

George III said the ragctag colonial militias and army were no match for British soldiers.

I am not advocating for open fighting between political sides. I hope it never happens. But given who the political opposition is in this case, it ssems to me like a good idea to be prepared.

on jan 20 joe biden will be the official president. If trump wants to not leave, the secret service will remove him from the building for trespassing.

After that, he can try n incite all the insurrection he wants, it wont work...cause nobody in any kind of official capacity with any kind of power will listen to him.

Itd be nice tho, if there was a New York state or Manhattan DAs subpoena waiting for him when he exits the building...

of the Senate presides over the certification process. That would be Pence or Grassly. You have more faith in their integrity than I do.

So you don't believe that Trump would rely on military groups like Blackwater to back him - before the votes are certified? Or that there are well armed RW militias that he could call on to join Blackwater? You don't think it's possible for a RW coup to occur in the US? Nothing in the words or actions of Trump, his supporters in ICE, Blackwater, and militias, as well as in the Senate and House suggests to you that they would attempt a RW coup?

I hope you're right.

members. Another image is the slim, fit Timothy McVeigh with his military training and experience.

For a more realistic view of RW militias, there is a well researched book, Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitsry America, by Kathleen Belew.

it's not like Trump would ever defy or ignore legal documents. Or use armed agencies against citizens in the streets. Or look to armed militias for support. After all, has it ever occurred in history that a leader could establish a dictatorship by declaring a national emergency and using personal militias?

trump does not have to concede. When the election results are certified a winner is chosen. On Jan 20 2021 he is no longer president. Biden could issue orders from anywhere and they would be obeyed as the new President.

why create fear in the population?

Trump, his supporters in Congress, and his supporters among voters have always had respect for the rule of law, for court orders and decisions, and for constitutional principles. They are not the kind of people to foment rebellion, refuse to follow court decisions or use force against political opponents or citizens.
(Ironic hyperbole)

So when VP Pence or Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassly presides over the certification of the electoral college votes, and declares Biden the official winner, the transition will go smoothly.
(more ironic hyperbole)

What could possibly go wrong in this process? We can count on the integrity of the courts, especially SCOTUS, to render impartial decisions if requested to intervene in an election. We can count equally on the integrity of VP Pence and Senator Chuck Grassly.
(even more ironic hyperbole)

The US would never split in two as the result of an election, with two separate presidents, each acknowledged only by his own followers, and each side with its own fighting force to back itself up.
(Does it even need to be said again?)

Could never happen here.
