"Trump has a habit of creating messes for himself because hes so easy to play. So, so easy to play. You could get him to admit to robbing a bank by sitting him down and saying, we know you werent the brains of the operation, you were just the getaway driver, and hes say, No, no! I was the one who shot the bank clerk! That was me! That was my decision! He recently did this with coronavirus, this famed 3D chess everyone keeps telling me about. No politician wants to be in charge of reopening, because every death the media is going to leap on. So for some reason, the media got a bee in their bonnet, saying Trump has nothing to do with reopening, this is up to governors and mayors. And the next day, he holds a press conference saying its my decision.

(115,732 posts)Stopped clocks and all. Trump must be the easiest person in the world to manipulate, and I don't know why more GOPers in his administration and the Senate haven't figured this out. He's the classic terrible boss who's against everything anybody else suggests unless they can make him think it was his idea all along.

(11,738 posts)Everyone knows that Trump is easy to manipulate.
That has not been the problem. He has the GOP protecting him, Barr out there using the power of the AG to keep him out of trouble, a veritable network of enablers who will lie for him and obstruct.
Trump is media savvy. He knows how to play the media's fear of being seen as "biased" and the desires of the corporate offices for revenue and access to his advantage, at least in the short term.

(51,571 posts)Universal mask wearing is key to us opening up without cases spiking. But it can't be just a few of us for it to work. And thanks to Trump, Republicans won't wear masks because they see it as their Constitutional right to go maskless.
But every study to date has found universal mask wearing stops increases in cases. The most recent was this Cambridge study published yesterday: https://uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUKL8N2DN1M7
The study found that if people wear masks whenever they are in public it is twice as effective at reducing the R value than if masks are only worn after symptoms appear.
In all scenarios the study looked at, routine face mask use by 50% or more of the population reduced COVID-19 spread to an R of less than 1.0, flattening future disease waves and allowing for less stringent lockdowns.
