Based on the overnight TV ratings for Wednesday's Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway, NASCAR's decision to prohibit the display of the Confederate flag at its events and properties did not negatively impact viewership despite pushback from some of its fans. Quite the contrary.
Wednesday night's race at Martinsville, which started just a couple hours after NASCAR released a statement on its banishment of the flag, delivered massive numbers relative to comparable past Cup Series races.
The overnight ratings were up 104 percent "over the comparable race last season," per Fox Sports executive vice president Michael Mulvihill a rating of 1.14 compared to 0.56 for the 11th race of the season last year, an event at Dover International Speedway presented on the same channel (FS1).
So much for banning the rebel battle flag killing NASCAR. Sorry Ray.

(65,076 posts)...the sports fans are hungry for events of which they don't know the results.
Saw they're probably getting a bump from that hunger with people who normally don't watch races, and may not a year from now.
This actually was a perfect time for NASCAR to do this. No RWNJs making a spectacle over trying to flout the rules.
They have plenty of time to plan fan enforcement this way.

(21,794 posts). . .of Confederate and neo-Nazi symbols.
Stock-car racing, at its roots, was the province of bootleggers, who boosted their cars to out-run both the police and the KKK (and oftentimes those two parties were interchangeable).
Also, the KKK members were primarily Protestant, the ones who supported Prohibition; at the expense of other people's cultures, many for whom alcohol was a part of their culture and were predominantly Catholic.
Just sayin'
