The foolish American: Many Americans foolishly refuse to recognize this fact about the virus.

The virus is in charge, period.

We can reopen America, only as far as the virus will let us. States that have reopened in an uncontrolled manner, with little guidance, coordination, leadership, are now paying a price. Some of these states are still increasing their reopening. They must believe they can handle the increase in infections , deaths. They must believe the people of their states will not notice all the dead bodies. The virus has other ideas and it is the boss.

If people would pay attention, use their brain, they would recognize when the virus gives them a warning. Such as, Wear a mask or I will infect you. Do not gather in large numbers indoors without masks or I will infect many of you. There are millions of fools in this country who cannot comprehend these simple warnings.

The virus tells us, Refuse to wear masks, refuse to social distance and I will kill thousands of you.

Many Americans act like the virus is no big deal, the worst is over. Some believe the virus will not hurt them even if they get infected. That may turn out to be true, but there are no second chances with this virus. If you are wrong, you are dead.

Many Americans who don't think, fail to understand that if they get infected, they can spread it and kill people.

No one has spread the virus more than Trump. The foolish Americans are a close second. This is the reason we are by far number 1 in infections and deaths. This is why I fear the worst is yet to come.

It's very tempting to think that we can return to the busy lives we had a year ago. Or even six months ago.

My gym has opened, with limits, and I am vastly tempted to go. I'll wear a mask. I'll clean off the machines (I always did anyway). I'll social distance.................

But it's NOT WORTH IT. My county in Southern Oregon has been pretty good. We only have 78 cases. But the number has been going up a lot. People are going out to restaurants and shopping. Not me.

And when the virus comes calling? Not me.

We had a drink outside with dog at Growler Guys and wore our masks in to order. I guess I will say it wasn’t the same. We go out to relax and there was nothing relaxing about wondering if you will catch something.

I feel like I am getting a bit batty from staying home so much, maybe that is part of why people aren’t thinking. We are all going loony toons!

I don’t belong to a gym because I do nia dance which is now on zoom, but if it was indoors only like a gym I wouldn’t go either. I still don’t trust this. We do go to grocery stores but wear masks and still wash and wipe everything. Mike and I call any shopping going into a hot zone and prepare.

There was a woman at Costco (who requires you to put on a mask to get in) walking around without a mask and she had a look on her face like "I dare you to say something to me." What an idiot. I avoided her, as did most people, and reported her to a supervisor on my way out. I truly don't understand why people won't wear a mask! Do you really want to get sick and DIE???

that I find even more galling is that- even while they are telling everybody to go back to work, the gym, bars, pools, churches (in some cases threatening to sue states whom keep things restricted), etc., they themselves are continuing to work remotely, keeping their distance, taking unproven medications (HCL), being frequently tested, all things they are not encouraging the rest of us to do or enabling the rest of us to do. The rest of us are expendable to them. They are placing their own needs and fortunes ahead of the rest of ours. Trump may be wanting his supporters to risk their lives to come see him at his rallies but you can bet he's taking every precaution imaginable to ensure that he doesn't catch the virus and he would be bigly pissed if he ever did and probably find somebody to sue the pants off of.

Sometimes more information can be a problem.
When we first heard about covid19, the skinny on it was this:

“Deadly to older folks with compromised health”.

That meant that MANY super-rich older folks seemed to be the target. These are the people who get catapulted to the top of transplant lists, and have the best that money can buy when it comes to hospitals and specialists.

There was real cause for concern. The whole issue was all about protecting our elders. We were eager to stay at home, cut off contact.

Anything to protect Grandma and Grandpa, or CEOS. For days there were always pics of genteel/frail (white) elders on tv day and night.

BUT it wasn’t long before more information came out that narrowed the “target” population.

Poor people are at greater risk because of the density of living conditions, mostly in larger cities (Usually Democratic party voters live there).

They are also more at risk because of their health issues. Decades of poor health care due to the fact that most poor people work really shitty jobs with no sick leave or health insurance. These people rely on the ER for health care, and cannot pay for their care.

Many poor folks are chronically unemployed, or homeless. This means that their basic food supply is laden with fats/sugars and is often stuff that’s bought at bodegas/dollar stores and is usually “processed” to the nth degree. Obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, and diabetes are well known to poor people.

These are not “personal choices”. They are financial consequences of where and how they have to live (polluted areas with bad air, bad water, mold, toxic substances in the buildings, etc).

The elder poor who are in nursing homes are usually in homes that are Medicaid-supported. These places are often staffed with younger poor folks who make substandard wages, are extremely overworked, and often live in densely populated living conditions.

Elder not-so-poor are not immune even though they can afford resort style retirement homes, because the staff is still often poor younger folks, since the owners of these facilities are always watching “the bottom line”.

Minorities are often a large part of the poor faction. Hispanics, documented or undocumented, and African Americans soon became the media focus.

With that new focus, every interviewer was immediately putting any democrat on the air in the hot seat with questions about why these folks were not a part of the $1200 scheme and how they (Dems) would shape future legislation to see that these people got their fair shake.. and of course why they were disproportionately affected by the virus..(always asked with pretend naivete)

It was not a very far leap before prisoners became the focus.

So in a few weeks, the story about the virus went from being a bad old invisible enemy set on killing Granny & Gramps, to an inevitable force of nature that seemed to be preying on “illegals, non-whites, lazy poor folks, and prisoners”.

I’ve understood how republicans think for a very long time now, and I knew where this was heading. Remember after Katrina, when some congressman said that Katrina had accomplished what “they” had been trying to do for a very long time?

Republicans are just fine with the virus running wild.
Apparently, Trump can not only shoot someone on 5th Avenue, but he can also exterminate tens of thousands of people, and his crew will love him all the more.

This is why he does not want to waste money and effort on testing. He needs for the virus to do his party’s work, and if a few doctors and nurses, or some celebs die, he’s ok with that.

He can now just blame the governors.

Scientists and health care professionals are still uncovering new revelations about Covid-19. Some patients infected continue to suffer lingering after effects. I cannot for the life of me understand how some folks can take the seriousness of this situation so lightly. Read just one amazing example of the damage done to one patient by Covid-19 and the heroic and amazing measures that doctors took to save her life. The damage done to this young woman's lungs is the stuff of nightmares. We must do all we can to protect ourselves and, by doing so, we'll be protecting others. Trump's willful failure to institute a nation-wide system of managing this crisis is nothing short of criminal.

I’m sorry, but I think the “reopening too soon” argument is now lost amid these large public gatherings. These activists are also, presumably, going home and back to work after the protests are over, and they are spreading the virus as surely as the person who went to their favorite restaurant.

It would be hypocritical of me not to confess that I have not stayed home either, but the few restaurants we have been too have been outside on the patio with a minimum of six feet between the tables. We also wear our masks, and only remove them after the server has left the table.

I can't pound it through the "free dumbs" idiot's heads. But I did make one angry enough to totally go off on me with this:
The lungs of a health-compromised person are much like an open wound. The oxygen exchange barrier between your bloodstream and the air is thinner there than anywhere else, and in a diabetic, cancerous or many other conditions, that barrier has practically no protection, very little moist phlegm layer, and is much like an open wound to the air it is pumping, at some pressure too.
Now, if the surgeon getting ready to work on you were to say "I won't wear a mask during your operation"....
You'd kick that motherfucker out and go find a competent surgeon wouldn't you?
