(244 posts)These people are not sincere. Their subliminal message is, "it's not the Republican party, it's Trump. We're not responsible for this mess." They are setting themselves up to come back in four years with a smart Reagan/Cheney Republican who doesn't say the shit out loud...

(26,355 posts)I'm happy to watch what they're doing with the Lincoln Project with a bowl of popcorn.
But I think we Democrats need to be taking notes - they've been doing this sort of thing for decades, and they're very good at it. I do have to admire their technique and chutzpah. IMHO, Democrats waste too much time agonizing about whether an ad is too mean. Rick Wilson don't roll that way - he truly is a mean son-of-a-bitch - he put in that clip of Trump with toilet paper on his shoe, and another Lincoln Party ad just straight-up called him a coward.
Maybe we should be exercising that kind of chutzpah instead of worrying about whether an ad's too mean. Trump's a dirty rotten psychopathic piece of shit. As far as I'm concerned, open season. We need to be mean SOBs right now.
And do keep in mind: they're not going to be on our side four years from now.

StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)No one's been talking about it. Now they will.
These kinds of ads aren't intended to just be shown and reach people directly. They're designed to generate buzz and get the press and political pundits to talk about them and amplify them and the message they're sending.
Ilsa
(61,722 posts)But I think at some point we need specific examples of his mental and physical decline.
We need his med records. Maybe this will help force the issue when he refuses to release them.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)The medical records are a different issue. We're not going to ever get those. But he'll start getting questions and pressure about his records and his physical and mental condition, which is great. That's the purposet of the ad.

(26,355 posts)First obvious example is WaterGait. Second example is the inject disinfectants thing. All you have to do is look at his tweets online - at times they're completely batshit.
The examples of him looking impaired in one way or another are endless.
backscatter712
(26,355 posts)It's all over Twitter, they're putting it on Facebook, Instagram, etc.
I'd say these ads are somewhat like Daisy in that Daisy only aired once, and it was so controversial it was taken off, but the buzz it generated made sure everyone knew about it.
Here, same thing. They can only spend so much on ad buys, but I'll bet ten times as many people have seen these just from them being passed around on social media.
And yeah, the talk about Trump's health is heating up - between WaterGait, and being Commander Clorox, I think just about everyone's realized he's a few French fries short of a Happy Meal.

(10,669 posts)As I said on another thread, I could not care less if Trump is sick. I care that he is a criminal and should be in jail.
The emphasis on his health in the ad is misplaced. Not powerful at all. It's like, I hear the magats and undecideds saying, "huh. Is that all you've got?"
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)Or me, for that matter.
Anyone who thinks he's a criminal and should be in jail is already not voting for him. And the Magats and undecideds have been told every which way from Sunday that he's corrupt, but that obviously hasn't convinced them.
These ads are aimed at Republicans. And I think they're very effective.
Peacetrain
(22,902 posts)and it is pretty darned good.. The only thing that would impress those of us who have been in the trenches against Trump from the get go would be his DNA on the murder weapon.. this ad is not for us.. it is going to make people who can be reached stop and think

(10,131 posts)The neanderthal mentality of the GOP has historically harped on non GOP leaders who are "weak" vs the GOP leader who was supposedly strong.
You cannot look at the walk down the ramp at West Point or having to use his other hand to drink a glass of water (two examples) or his speech slurring or his waistline and conclude Trump is a physically strong leader.
Remember this?
Trump: Clinton 'doesn't have the stamina' to be president
https://www.cnn.com/2016/09/27/politics/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-stamina/index.html
Now replay those words as Trump struggles to get down the ramp vs Joe out for a job with BLM protesters.
This ad isn't supposed to make the case. It's laying the foundation for making the case between now and November.
It sounds like there's more to come in terms of the late night visits to the hospital.
The ads are directed at his supporters or those who might support him - not Democrats.

(18,486 posts)Discuss his mental acuity and physical heaklth.. And the doctors certainly never presented their opinions like this.
And remember, this is just one ad focusing on one thing. They're obviously coming at him from many different directions, poking at various soft spots.
But tell me ...Exactly what do you think should be in an ad that would be more effective?

(26,355 posts)And I find attacks on a candidate's perceived health to be very effective.
The right-wing was pretty effective playing that game with Hillary, and they're also trying it with Biden.
Of course, with Trump, there's no need to make shit up - he's Commander Clorox - he's pretty obviously got a brain that looks like Swiss cheese in an MRI.
There's a bit of psychology going on - when you attack a candidate's health like this, and make him look weak, voters really pick up on that.

Sun Tsu: If your opponent has a choleric temperament, irritate him.
Yes, that should be what we're doing - we want to make sure we're living rent-free in his head 24/7. We want to keep him on tilt. We want him upset. Because when he's upset, he makes mistakes, and when he makes mistakes, we pounce!

StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)It's a 45-second ad, not a documentary. The point is to trigger the conversation and coverage. This does that. You can bet that by tomorrow, all of the networks will be showing the ad , discussing his impairment and augmenting the discussions with numerous clips of the kind you're talking about.
And if this reminds them of their elderly relatives, great. They don't think Trump is elderly or shaky and definitely don't think he's like their elderly relatives. He sells himself as vibrant, youthful and the healthiest specimen of a man anyone ever knew. If this makes them think he's like the old, infirm people they know, that's a pretty humiliating comedown for him.

(18,486 posts)Lawrence O'Donnell and Rachel Maddie talking about his health is one thing. That just rolls off his back.
But a group of Republicans calling him out as sick, weak and pitful in an ad directed to his followers is something totally different - especially after he's been trying to convince them he wasn't as raggedy as he appeared last weekend. This will definitely leave a mark.

(18,486 posts)It will push Trump into making a big deal of this trying to prove he's not infirm, which will give the ad and the issue even more attention. He will likely turn his health into a much bigger thing. He can't help himself and they know it.

(91,257 posts)The people running The Lincoln Project are all former GOP operatives and they are accustomed to winning. What they do works. They know their audience: people who voted for Trump in 2016 and are now sorry, plus never-Trumpers.
They are not wasting time and money targeting either Democrats or MAGAts. We don't need persuading, and MAGAs are unreachable.

(7,220 posts)These Lincoln Log Republicans or whatever they call themselves, they get it. They know when der Trumpsky is projecting because he points his weakness at others.
With all the distractions right now, it's the perfect time to turn the narrative around on Trump. Whether it's true or not that his health is failing, whether it is hurtful to older people or not, is that really important right now? We're fighting for our literal lives, and if we don't gutterpunch old Tacky Caligula while he's reeling from all the pandemic and the public uprising and my oh my, the grifting opportunities for him and his wealthy supporters(!), we're going to wish we hadn't taken such a high road.
I'm not one for gutter fights. But everything is on the line. Literally everything. Steve Schmidt and his friends know it, enough that they are actually fighting for us. And we know it too.

(7,220 posts)TRUMP who is the one whose health is failing? Biden's had a stutter since he was young, and they're basically willing to act like he's...well, as ill as Trump?
If it makes you feel any better, so far the Democrats ARE taking the high road. It's the Lincoln Project that's gutter fighting. To our benefit, mind you, and I think we can all agree that if it helps save the world from this monster, isn't it worth it?

(24,430 posts)If not, then the fact that a ramp was provided just for Trump speaks volumes about his physical condition. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time we saw him walking down steps. I have heard he has a natural fear of them, and hates that he has to used steps to board and exit Air Force One.
But having a fear of steps and not being physically able to climb them are two different things.
