I was just watching Smerconish on CNN and he was playing this song as he was discussing if people are proud to be Americans. It just made me realize how much I hated this corny song. What is your take in the song?
Edit: i guess I use to like the song when I was younger during the Gulf War, but over the years it had morphed into a Republican song instead of an American song.

(5,683 posts)Ive always been very proud of him and all the males in my family that have served. Represent all of the forces ( except the new dumb one).
I am no longer a proud patriot. I guess I dont know what it means. Thought I did.

(3,527 posts)I no longer attend air shows because of this "patriotic" song.
Surprise, Lee Greenwood didn't serve in the military.

(5,543 posts)I do have a story for a time when it did have some meaning to me.
I was at the World Trade Center in the aftermath of 9/11 on Search and Rescue.
I was having lunch at one of the rescue stations when a group of "USO" styled celebrities came through to lend support to the rescuers. I got to sit and talk with Olivia Newton John for a few minutes which fulfilled many of my childhood dreams.
Anyway, Lee Greenwood was one of those celebrities. At the urging of the crowd, he was asked to sing it. He climbed up on a chair in the middle of the room and sung it. I have to confess that at that time, in that place, it had some meaning.
Like all things sentimental, they have their place on RARE occasions. Supporting a fascist isn't one of them.

(59,593 posts)The "Badonviller-Marsch" (AM II, 256) is a Bavarian military march by composer Georg Fürst (18701936). After 1934, with its name Germanized to "Badenweiler Marsch" by the Nazis, it was used as the official march of Hitler in his role as Führer, to signal his arrival and therefore personal presence at public events.

(58,728 posts)Listen superficially and it sounds "good." Think about the lyrics a bit and it is exposed as the jingoistic pseudo-patriotic crap you'd expect from RW creeps.
