Statue of Confederate general toppled in Washington, Trump calls it a 'disgrace'

(Reuters) - Protesters pulled down a statue of a Confederate general in Washington late on Friday, part of a wave of anti-racism demonstrations in the United States.

Television images showed the statue of Albert Pike, which was located near Judiciary Square, being pulled down with ropes as protesters cheered "Black Lives Matter." They then used flammable liquid to set a fire on the statue. Police put out the fire.

President Donald Trump said in a tweet, "The D.C. Police are not doing their job as they watch a statue be ripped down & burn. These people should be immediately arrested. A disgrace to our Country!"

There have been protests against racism and police brutality across the country and around the world since George Floyd, a Black man, died in Minneapolis police custody last month. Some of the focus has been calls for authorities take down monuments honoring figures from the pro-slavery Confederate side in the American Civil War.

Why the fuck would we have a statue of a Confederate General in DC of all places?

There are statues of Confederates INSIDE the Capitol building. 17 of them! Pelosi has indicated she will try to get rid of them, but Republicans are crying foul.

That is how fucked up this situation is. We have statues of TRAITORS, of people who took up arms against the United States, in places of honor in our damned Capitol building!

We have MANY disgraces in our country, one of the biggest, is having a rally in Tulsa today.

Albeit we can only hope (and work to ensure) that no such monstrosities are ever erected to begin with.

i forget the exact wording but it was something like......

If you are saying "it is a shame that the police are murdering Blacks but all this vandalism has to stop"

and not: "it is a shame that this vandalism is happening but murdering Blacks has to stop"

then you just don't get it..................

note that they were referring to window smashing, burning, looting and not taking down statues (which is not vandalism, it is justice).

In case you haven't noticed, Mr. President Sir (he likes it when people call him "sir" even when they don't), the nation is still reeling from the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 40 million Americans are out of work, and the country is crumbling in your tiny ineffectual hands. Don't you think the president should have more important matters to attend to than a statue being toppled? A statue of a person you couldn't identify if your miserable life depended on it.

Have to admit, in the November big picture, rw has a winner in the knockdown to the GW statue - as well as against the 'DEFUND' crowd.
