(17,266 posts)It is indeed a 'phobia'. The root of bigotry has always been fear.
Though I cannot argue at all with the 'asshole' part.

(111,254 posts)However, for the ones so deeply closeted they despise what they see in themselves as "feminine" and by extension, all women and all gays, it almost does rise to the level of a phobia. They all seem to feel contaminated somehow by sex with either.

(1,296 posts)A couple of decades ago, some psychologists wired up a bunch of bigots to a variety of somatic sensors which, they say, can do a pretty accurate job of measuring someone's level of fear&anxiety reactions to stimuli. They found that of all the different kinds of hating bigots, it was the homophobes who had the strongest streak of real fear -- something not at all prominent with, for instance, race-based hate.
The second strongest fear reaction was to feminists.

(2,720 posts)From watching Republicans, it's obvious that homophobes aren't terrified of gays.
They're terrified that they are gay.

(17,193 posts)Homophobia is "fear of the same" or "fear of the like." It has nothing to do with hating homosexuals. And it is strange that it would be accepted as such, since "homo" is considered an insulting way to refer to gay people.
