bill kristol tweets:
"You look at the polls and think "he can't win." But Trump's path to victory doesn't depend on persuading Americans. It depends on voter suppression, mass disinformation, foreign interference, and unabashed use of executive branch power to shape events, and perceptions, this fall."

Kristol is not his statement.
Kristol states the obvious because he can.
But Kristol positions himself and those he champions for the future, the goals haven't changed. Just Trump has outlived his usefulness.

(21,466 posts)My Bingo comment was in response to the last sentence in the post which said that Trump has outlived his usefulness.
In general, R's who criticize Trump now are doing it because they want a different frontman for their agendas. The tide has turned regarding Trump. They need a new angle, a new presentation of their goals and policy preferences.
There are exceptions. As you point out, some have always been critical of Trump. George Will is another one. And George Conway.

(7,286 posts)I know it's a pipe dream and in 2016 I laughed up my sleeve at folks who were saying that patriotic members of the electoral college should refuse to certify Trump as president
Now I wonder if they look around at present events, look back and think: ya know, maybe we made a lil mistake. Would they let that happen again?
It's a bit like Kapernick, folks are falling all over themselves saying how he was right for taking a knee

(65,042 posts)But, it's little more than a state by state rubber stamp.
The framers actually had concerns of a demagogue confusing the masses. It wasn't their main reason for the EC, but it was at least a small part. But, that consideration was nonexistent in 2000, 2004, & 2016.

(65,042 posts)That's the open question they need to ask themselves.
6,200 show up in a 19k+ capacity building, with some leaving early, after no rallies in months.
Is the act getting stale?
Is it really drawing viewers?
Even Faux, with their crowing about great Saturday night ratings, got pinched when data shows their normal Saturday night viewership is 30 to 50 thousand. So, a doubling is only 30 or 50 thousand more people. And that's on Faux.
They claim millions streaming, but given the number of possible routes, they did not have enough time to compile those numbers before the bragging began.
I'm not so sure that PINO is all that good for business anymore.

(89,249 posts)I would not worry as much. We could focus on the usual things to help bring out the vote.
But I worry about them doing things to prevent people from voting. To prevent certain votes from being counted. And other shit they will pull.

(14,565 posts)And the formula is aided immensely by the fact that we nominated an old man. I love Joe Biden but logically he is going to make mistakes and come across as old at various points during the general election.
I am flabbergasted that anyone can look at an 8-12 point poll margin and somehow conclude it is legitimate and will maintain throughout...with nothing to worry about.

(86,622 posts)Even though I have loathed him for decades. He's correct, though. What we do know at this point is who our allies are in this nightmare and we will need them right now. Those allies, so far, are the judiciary and the House.

(63,221 posts)the election. First of all, the man has a knack for destroying everything he touches and he in a downward spiral. I honestly think that the Covid-19 situation and the economy are only going to get worse between now and November.
Also, there is the issue of his health. Both physical and mental. They are both deteriorating at a rapid rate and he may not be capable of finishing out his term.
Then there are always the wild cards. Something could pop up unexpectedly that could throw his administration into a tailspin. A scandal, a slew of resignations, his tax forms being released, etc. Or we could have a devastating hurricane or two that make landfall in the south in which he completely bungles the response. The threat of World War. There are a number of things that can go wrong between now and then.
The biggest advantage they have is their potential to cheat and that is it. We need to do everything we can to stop it. I honestly don't think he can win unless they get away with it again. We are forewarned this time.

(9,670 posts)Conventional wisdom will not win this election. The votes you're counting on may never be counted. Those votes may be stolen before, during or after the election. Whatever evils we experienced in 2016 - the extent of which we don't know because the truth was successfully suppressed - will pale in comparison to the maelstrom that we will be facing.
