Tens of thousands of people will need to be recalled to hospital after a serious Covid-19 infection to check if they have been left with permanent lung damage, doctors have told the BBC.
Experts are concerned a significant proportion could be left with lung scarring, known as pulmonary fibrosis.
The condition is irreversible and symptoms can include severe shortness of breath, coughing and fatigue.
NHS England said it was opening specialist rehabilitation centres.

Lung fibrosis cannot be cured because scarring in the lung tissue is permanent. But new drugs can slow down the progression of the disease and even stop it completely if detected in time.

I do take precautions but the thing is I believe that my time on earth Is predetermined. I could be healthy as a horse and die tomorrow choking on a peach pit or get t-boned in a vehicle.
I am gonna live while I have life. Damaged lungs or no. Covid or no. Cancer or no. Etc etc etc.

(21,106 posts)there are fewer deaths. While this may be true, it belies the damaging effects that catching this virus can have on ones body. Just because a person doesn't die, it is not all peaches and cream.

(23,099 posts)My mom died of pulmonary fibrosis 6 years ago and my sister has it now. It's very scary for her and her family that loves her. So sad that lots of others might go through this grueling trial. Hopefully there's more that can be done now than was available 6 years ago.

(63,221 posts)Or is it only older people with co-morbidities? If it does damage the lungs of otherwise younger and healthier people, I think we need to flood the airwaves with some scary public health ads letting people know what this virus can do to people, even if it doesn't kill them.
