You do realize that we are on our own for fighting COVID right?

Trump is basically leaving us to our own devices. It's clear that he's bored with the pandemic and is moving on to his next fix for excitement.

Without clear leadership, there's simply no way in hell that we will be able to fight, much less beat this thing. If there is a second wave, it will be worse. And Trump will find very few excuses to actually give a shit.

Wear masks,
avoid people,
wash your hands.

It's pretty basic. Wear a mask in public, wash your hands often, avoid crowds and observe social distancing. We all have to decide what level of risk we are willing to take and use the necessary precautions for self protection.

BTW, it's not just Trump. Look how many states are reopening even though they don't meet the guidelines set by the CDC. Clearly, the economy comes ahead of human lives.

He never did want to do anything and still doesn't. Instead he has begrudgingly provided some fed assistance but was still more interested in get his fat yap on tv. Oh and provide a few opportunities for some of his lackeys to make a buck.

What has happened has been almost entirely up the State and local gov'ts.

“If we don’t step up and take responsibility, government itself can’t solve this problem,” Jared Moskowitz, the state Division of Emergency Management director, said in an interview.

He's correct to some extent, since there's indeed people being reckless despite warnings and recommendations. However, the Republicans in government are barely trying. They often won't make mask-wearing mandatory, for example, and then the authorities are reluctant to intervene when there's violations.

It will be a Herculean effort to get this country through COVID and all of it's ramifications (social, economic).

It's something that Trump and the Republicans don't want to be responsible for - they can't and don't want to actually govern.

It would be so much easier for him (and in line with who he is) to simply walk away from the mess he's created and sit on the sidelines blaming everyone else for why the country has fallen off a cliff. Also, there's a lot of money to be made from grievance and plenty of people willing to tune into TrumpTV to get their hate fix.

Even House and Senate Republicans are not looking forward to having to actually deal with this mess - they would much rather just sit back and obstruct and cast dispersions on whatever the new Democratic administration does rather than trying to fix it - they don't know how to build, just bust shit up.

long time, and some of the states are too. Politics has gotten to the point that its not about governing, its simply about winning and that's it, and we all see it everyday, its either my way or the highway, it seems w/ a lot of these republicans, they haven't included democratic representatives on any of the important committees in Congress to speak on/out on bills before them, etc. We literally have zero representation in Congress.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic about government for the people, by the people, etc., because I haven't really seen it (especially in this administration, being that the only thing that I can see that they passed was a tax cut bill for the top earners/wealth holders in this country, ignoring over 80% of Americans in the process).

The purpose of Republican individualism is purely to destroy any and all community efforts at organizing to better our lives - even to survive a global pandemic and climate change. That's all driven by the global plutocrats and fascist politicians like Putin.

You're exactly right, Intech. Trump and his red state governors are abandoning any and all efforts to control this pandemic. They want red state economies to dominate the economic landscape but with the cost of thousands of unnecessary COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths.

It's impossible for Republicans to lead governments they're trying to destroy.

The fact is that our government failed us, and they failed us bi time. We weren't prepared for this socially or economically, and even when we find cures and treatments, rebuilding supply chains to pre-COVID levels could easily take the next 10 years. And if history is repeating itself with this virus, imagine what will await us in 2030.

It screws with your mind when you realize you're not only fighting the virus but your own country's leadership that is telling you your common sense perceptions of unfolding events are wrong.

In January 1945, as the Red Army encroached from the eastern front, and the Western Allies encroached from the west, and cities were firebombed, Goebbels still reassured Germans that if they dug enough trenches and fought hard enough the war was still winnable.
