US nurses at for-profit hospital chain to strike over cuts and PPE shortages

Nurses and support staff at HCA Healthcare, the largest for-profit hospital chain in the US, are planning to strike this Friday in protest over cuts and concessions the corporation is pushing on frontline healthcare workers as coronavirus continues to spread through the US.

The Guardian and Kaiser Health News has so far identified 586 frontline healthcare workers who have died of Covid-19 in the US amid continuing reports of long hours and shortages of personal protection equipment (PPE).

Erin McIntosh, a nurse in the code blue/rapid response department at the HCA-owned Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, California, for six years, is one of around 1,000 nurses represented by SEIU Local 121RN who are going on strike starting 26 June in protest of hospital understaffing during the pandemic, which they say violates California’s nurse-to-patient ratio laws.

“HCA has continuously not upheld their end of the mediation agreement of our nurses staying in ratio,” said McIntosh. The agreement was made in March 2019. “We’re striking June 26 through July 6 because they didn’t want to uphold our mediation agreement.”

This sucks. Why do we have to pay so much for insurance? It's because the Repubs (and establishment Dems, too...) don't do it. But an establishment Democrat is better than any Republican by association!

It's wrong on every level. If we cannot keep all those who work to maintain a hospital setting (or any workplace for that matter) safe, then it's unsafe and cannot be continued, and in this case, life threatening?

I want nurses to stand up and say no. They did not sign up to fight in a war. They need proper PPE and nothing less
